Sponsor eye surgery & eradicate blindness in India

Selvamani was as carefree as 10 year olds come.

The sceneries that populated the child’s landscape were his school, the playground and his home. It was a colourful and an enriching landscape where Selvamani and his friends often found themselves exploring the wonders of the magical childhood they were experiencing. After school activities usually included games and explorations till it was time to head back home.

On one such day when the kids of the locality were engaged in an intense match of cricket, things got a heated quickly gave way to a full-fledged fight. Selvamani’s head was at the receiving end of another child’s bat. The impact of the blow to the head was severe and was the beginning of Selvamani’s vision problems.

Initially the child only complained of blurred vision. His father took him to a local ophthalmologist for treatment. The local ophthalmologist gave primary treatment to the child. Over time his condition worsened.

His parents were at a loss of what to do. They attended one of the camps conducted by Sankara where they were informed that the child had suffered trauma which resulted in cataract. After all the preliminary tests and investigations were conducted,  our doctors performed the surgery at Sankara Eye Hospital.

Selvamani is now raring to go back to the playground that he has missed so much, hopefully this time understanding the importance of protective head gear.

Nilam, 50 years, was suffering from Cataract in his Right eye. He is an Auto driver by profession .He realized things had gone bad when he suddenly wasn’t not able to drive auto as the dusk sets in. His paralyzed wife at home is completely dependent on him. Every aspect of his life is affected due to his poor vision, be at home or at work. His varied existence dependent on his ability to earn a livelihood.

Listening to a friend’s advice, Nilam decided to visit the Sankara outreach camp in his village. Camp doctors identified Cataract in his right eye. He was brought to Sankara eye hospital Guntur where he was operated for Cataract. Post-surgery, he is back to work, drives auto without any difficulties and earn some 300 Rs. per day.

Sankara and its likeminded partners such as Cognizant Foundation contribute directly to people empowerment and poverty reduction by reversing decreased productivity due to vision loss.

Needless to say with his new found confidence, Nilam’s productivity has increased and got a new meaning to his sole existence.
