Access to Clean water - a basic right.

By Deepika Panner | Project Leader

Access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation is a basic human right. The ambit of access to water for women, especially from the Dalit communities becomes narrower due to their weak socio-economic status. When Dalit Women goes to fetch the water from common places they are not accepted and they suffer frequently accompanied by prejudice and violence. In many places, traditionally sanctioned socio-cultural norms like untouchability still play a critical role despite the natural availability of water. Particularly, in developing countries, sanitation and hygiene are also one of the most visible disparities between men and women. The provision of hygiene and sanitation are considered women’s tasks. Women are promoters, educators and leaders of home and community-based sanitation practices, but their concerns are rarely addressed as societal barriers often restrict women’s involvement and their views are systemically under-represented in the decision-making process. Therefore Nandri takes initiative in providing them clean water for Dalit families. Particularly, in five villages Nandri supported to build a mini water tanks for Dalits.

As you know Nandri formed two years ago a group called Eco-Protection Force [EPF] and now we have planted almost 9000 palm seeds and 10000 saplings in various villages through our Nandri mothers. Every month Nandri keeps providing tree saplings to Nandri mothers and school children. Presently Nandri distributed 500 tree saplings to Government Primary School, Kolappalur. And made them plant at home. As the children grow, this plant also will grow. Thus, Nandri is a great guide and inspiration for the children to keep our world green and clean.

The importance of healthy eating for students

Research has shown that students are able to learn better when they’re well nourished, and eating healthy meals has been linked to higher grades, better memory and alertness. Hence Nandri is teaching and helping the students to have healthy food, and clean water. Likewise Nandri is developing the students to make vegetable garden at home and as well as in their schools so that they will have best pure organic food. And also Nandri provided 500 tiffin boxes for the primary students to have food from home and allowing them to bring their water bottles into the classroom with them. In addition Nandri donated water purifier machine to the government girl’s hostel at Chetpet, on the back of Nandri the thirst for water is quenched.
