Sanitation and Clean Water for 60 Dalit Families

by Nandri
Sanitation and Clean Water for 60 Dalit Families

WHY IS PROPER SANITATION SO IMPORTANT?

Proper sanitation facilities improve  the well being of the whole community and prevents the spread of a number of diseases, including diarrhea, cholera and polio. The basic lack of a toilet means our Nandri families have to endure the indignity of defecating in the fields, putting their health and the health of others at risk.

HOW NANDRI IS HELPING OUR FAMILIES.

Education is the key.  We are educating our mothers in the importance of basic hygiene and cleanliness.  For example washing your hands frequently to prevent the spread of germs and diseases. We distribute educational information and by educating the women, they will in turn educate their families.  Nandri also organises local doctors and nurses to speak to our mothers groups on the importance of hygiene and sanitation.

We make having a toilet possible.  Nandri is subsidising loans to families. The government in India provides grants but for poor families this is not enough to build their own toilet.  A loan from Nandri enables them to build a basic toilet and this makes such a difference to our families lives. Access to proper sanitation is something we take for granted every day.  For our families, proper sanitation is changing and enriching the lives of our Nandri communities, keeping them healthier and bringing greater dignity to their lives. Thank you to all our sponsors for making it all possible.

We take for granted many things in our lives and access to clean water and proper sanitation are certainly two things we expect in society today.  For many people in rural India they do not have that “luxury”. The lack of toilets and safe drinking water in the villages causes many health problems and diseases. With no sanitation our poor families have to defecate in the fields beside their homes.

Proper sanitation brings numerous benefits such as reducing diseases and improving the quality of life.  Nandri recognises the importance of proper sanitation and has given priority to helping our families build their own toilets.  We have formed 238 mothers groups in the target area and the mothers are very keen to build toilets in their own homes.

These motivated mothers are creating a revolution in their villages by making people aware of the importance of hygiene, toilets and proper sanitation.  Nandri also provides financial support for the construction of the toilets.  The newly built toilets are a huge source of pride for the families and make their lives so much more dignified, healthy and hygienic.

To date, our sanitation programme has provided a total of 58 families with new toilets for their homes. The toilets are a very basic outdoor construction  the Indian government will provide 50 per cent towards the cost of building but without a loan from Nandri the families would be unable to afford the balance.

It is normal in poor areas of rural India for families to defecate in the fields beside their homes. The loans from Nandri to help build toilets has changed the lives of these impoverished people and given them the opportunity to live cleaner and therefore healthier, more dignified lives.

We are continuing to educate our mothers and children about the importance of hygiene to prevent diseases, teaching them to wash their hands frequently to prevent the spread of germs.  The children are bringing the lessons they are learning in our Resource Centers  home and sharing good hygiene practices amongst the rest of their families!

Nandri would like to say a big thank you to our supporters of this project. You are helping us transform the quality of these families lives forever.

The United Nations has stated that the right to safe and clean drinking water and sanitation is a human right.  It should not be a privilege or impossibility, as it is for most of our poor Dalit families. India has voted to prioritize sanitation development and Nandri is proudly playing its part in helping our families improve their basic water and sanitation conditions.

Basic sanitation facilities improve the health of the whole community, preventing the spread of numerous diseases, including diarrhea, a common cause of illness. Due to lack of sanitation, Cholera and Polio are also more prevalent in areas lacking proper sanitation.  The basic lack of a toilet means our Nandri families have to endure the indignity of defecating in the fields, putting their health and the health of others at risk.

HOW NANDRI IS HELPING OUR FAMILIES

We are creating awareness amongst our mothers of the need for basic hygiene and cleanliness, for example washing your hands frequently to prevent the spread of germs and diseases.  Through the Mothers groups, we distribute government leaflets educating on the importance of hygiene.  By educating the women, they will in turn pass on this important information to their families.  Nandri is also conducting rallies in the community with doctors and nurses invited to speak on the importance on hygiene and sanitation.

Nandri is providing loans to families to build their own toilets.  The government in India is providing grants but frequently for our very poor families this is not enough to allow them construct their own toilet.  A loan from Nandri makes it possible and to date 58 families have availed of a loan, helping to make their families lives so much more healthy and dignified.

Such a basic necessity of access to a toilet, that we take for granted in our everyday lives, is changing the lives of not only our Nandri families, but also their communities.  There is a cultural revolution in our villages with the introduction of proper sanitation and it is improving and changing  the lives of our mothers and their families and future generations forever.

in 2014 India launched a campaign to make the country “open defecation free” by Oct 2019 to mark the 150 th birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. This entails constructing millions of toilets in Rural India.

Nandri’s mothers groups are working to make this a reality in their own villages with the help of a government grant and a loan from Nandri. This means their families no longer have to suffer the degradation of defecating in a field.

The mothers have embraced the sanitation scheme and are delighted how having a toilet has improved their health and their lives.  Nandri loans have helped construct 38 toilets. We are continuing to expand this scheme to many more rural families with the help of your donations.

Malarkodi and her husband and two adult sons obtained a loan to build their own toilet.

The family are poor agricultural workers, living in kolapallur village. Recently their health had been suffering badly from diseases due to poor sanitation. The toilet has changed their health and lives - and is the source of a huge sense of pride for them all!

“Toilet construction has relieved me and my sons from shamefulness”  - Malarkodi.
