Never has there been a more important time for proper sanitation and good hygiene than now, with the threat of the COVID19 virus looming over our Nandri families. We have made great progress with building proper sanitation for individual families and teaching them how vital good hygiene practice is for their health but the truth is a toilet is still a rarity in poor areas of rural India. Infact none of our families have running water in their homes.  Water is collected and stored in pots for washing hands and utensils. Particularly now education in hygiene practices is absolutely essential for our families. This virus is extremely contagious so we have as a matter of urgency instigated a special COVID19 education programme for all our mothers and their families.  We emphasize the importance of hand washing in clean water and of social distancing and wearing masks to prevent spread. This disease is new to us all and it is so important that our families are informed in how to prevent contracting it. One of our new projects is the mothers groups are making masks for their families to wear to prevent them from spreading the virus.

All our Nandri families are being severely financially impacted by the 21 day lockdown and will be in great danger when the Covid Virus hits their villages. They live in very rural areas with little or no medical care and we have seen cities like New York with top rate health care brought to its knees by the number of people very ill and losing their lives. The Indian Government is giving some support but it will not be enough for our families to survive 21 days without work or income. Nandri is there to help and support our mothers and families through this desperate time. We will support our families financially. Just 1000 rupees (12 euros) per month to each of our mothers will help them survive this unprecedented pandemic.

COVID19 is devastating countries both rich and poor but the effect that it will have on our poorer countries is unimaginable. We have seen wealthy Nations with modern sanitation and sophisticated health care buckling under this virus. India has a population of 1.3 Billion, of which 360 million live in poverty with little or no sanitation.  This virus does not discriminate on who it infects but the poor are so much more vulnerable. Nandri has already transformed the lives of over 5000 poor Dalit mothers and their families and through out this pandemic we will do everything in our power to protect, support and see our vulnerable families through this desperate time.

We want to thank you, our donors who make it possible for Nandri to do this vital work of providing sanitation and clean water for our families. We will be working extremely hard to improve the conditions our families live in especially In this extraordinary and very frightening time. If you can donate and help us to help our families, we would be extremely grateful.  We have also set up a special COVID19 fundraising project on GlobalGiving which is linked below. As Nandri means thanks in the Tamil language we would like to say a big “NANDRI” to all our wonderful donors.

Nandri recognises that educating our families in the importance of proper sanitation and hygiene is vital.  Part of our project involves educating both the children and the mothers in how proper sanitation and basic hygiene prevent the spread of diseases such as diarrhea, cholera and polio.  For many of our families the lack of a toilet means having to defecate in fields, putting themselves and others at risk of diseases and infections.

Education is the key.  We are educating our mothers in the importance of basic hygiene and cleanliness.  For example washing your hands frequently to prevent the spread of germs and diseases. We distribute educational information and by educating the women, they will in turn educate their families.  Nandri also organises local doctors and nurses to speak to our mothers groups on the importance of hygiene and sanitation.

Happily this year as well as educating the community, Nandri has helped many families finance and install toilet facilities in their homes, bringing dignity and greater health to their lives.

With the help of our wonderful donors we look forward to building on and expanding our project in 2020.  On behalf of our families and all the Nandri community we say a big "Nandri" to our donors. In other words - "Thank you"

Project report on Sanitation:

Clean drinking water, hygiene, and sanitation play an important part in maintaining health. Open defecation means no sanitation. It fouls the environment and spreads diseases. Access to safe drinking water and good sanitation are vital for our family’s  well-being. Realising the importance of this, Nandri has taken earnest efforts in improving the health and Sanitary conditions of our community.

Process involved:

Nandri has started identifying the beneficiaries during the field visit done by the staff. Nandri has identified 58 families for the construction of toilets.
These beneficiaries were motivated to avail of the benefits given by the government, in which the government has come forward to provide Rs.10,000/($140) to those who are willing to construct toilets at their homes.
Since the amount given by the government is not sufficient, Nandri provided Rs.10,000 as a matching grant to complete the construction of toilets.
The amount was not given at one stretch, rather it was given stage by stage while seeing the development of the construction of toilets.
In many families, the members volunteered to offer their manual labor to cut down the expenses.
Our field staff monitored the progress of the construction and proper corrections and suggestions were given as and when needed.

Impact of the project:

Sanitation project has promoted  a dignified and decent life especially for the women in our community.
It has removed the embarrassment and danger of public defecation particularly for  women.
Local communities have been educated in the need for sanitation.
It has minimized health-related issues and diseases to a larger extent and led the people to lead a happier more dignified and healthy life.

Nandri has successfully completed the project as it was proposed. The amount received with the support of well-wishers through Global giving(€7250) was properly utilized on 58 families.  the government has now stopped the subsidy for the construction of toilets.  The needs of the community for proper sanitation are still vast and Nandri will continue its mission with the kind support of our generous donors.

Proper sanitation facilities improve  the well being of the whole community and prevents the spread of a number of diseases, including diarrhea, cholera and polio. The basic lack of a toilet means our Nandri families have to endure the indignity of defecating in the fields, putting their health and the health of others at risk.

We make having a toilet possible.  Nandri is subsidising loans to families. The government in India provides grants but for poor families this is not enough to build their own toilet.  A loan from Nandri enables them to build a basic toilet and this makes such a difference to our families lives. Access to proper sanitation is something we take for granted every day.  For our families, proper sanitation is changing and enriching the lives of our Nandri communities, keeping them healthier and bringing greater dignity to their lives. Thank you to all our sponsors for making it all possible.

We take for granted many things in our lives and access to clean water and proper sanitation are certainly two things we expect in society today.  For many people in rural India they do not have that “luxury”. The lack of toilets and safe drinking water in the villages causes many health problems and diseases. With no sanitation our poor families have to defecate in the fields beside their homes.

Proper sanitation brings numerous benefits such as reducing diseases and improving the quality of life.  Nandri recognises the importance of proper sanitation and has given priority to helping our families build their own toilets.  We have formed 238 mothers groups in the target area and the mothers are very keen to build toilets in their own homes.

These motivated mothers are creating a revolution in their villages by making people aware of the importance of hygiene, toilets and proper sanitation.  Nandri also provides financial support for the construction of the toilets.  The newly built toilets are a huge source of pride for the families and make their lives so much more dignified, healthy and hygienic.
