This project will provide 1,000 families with safe drinking water through water filters and training on hygiene and health practices in the Western Highlands of Guatemala - one of the country's most critical areas, where the indigenous population has more than 52% of children suffering from chronic malnutrition
More than 52% of children under five suffer from chronic malnutrition in the Northern Highlands of Guatemala, a major concern for their health and future. Over 90% of surface water sources are contaminated. Children are highly affected by acute diarrheal diseases, one of the leading causes of childhood illness, which harms both their physical growth and cognitive development
From the very first day, each family will receive a water filter to ensure safe drinking water, protecting them right away from harmful germs. Along with this, families will join a program that teaches simple hygiene and nutrition habits, using the Wheel of Good Practices method. Through these trainings, families will learn everyday behaviors that keep their children healthy and help prevent diseases caused by unsafe water.
This project helps families build lasting habits about health, hygiene, and good nutrition. Local health organizations will give technical support to make sure families know how to use and maintain the filters, so they last and keep working well. At the same time, mothers' community groups will encourage saving money together to cover future maintenance or replacement costs for the filters. The knowledge acquired will be transferred to the next generations.
