MRICRH Update

By Katie Ann Crosman | International Volunteer DEPDC/GMS

We are happy to report that Mekong Regional Indigenous Child Rights Home (MRICRH) in Mae Chan, Chiang Rai Province continues to be operational in its pursuit to provide a safe home for high-risk children, women, and men in the Greater Mekong Sub region (GMS) of Northern Thailand. This home provides crucial support for those that have been orphaned, trafficked, abandoned, and neglected. The children, women, and men receive shelter, protection, life skills development training, nutritious home made meals, family outreach services, government school education, basic necessities, medical care, school supplies, transportation to/from school, and vocational training.

Currently MRICRH has 3 cases; 2 boys and 1 man. This time of year is the time when we plant different trees and vegetables on the land. The extreme rainy season this year has made planting all our usual vegetables difficult. We have not been able to plant lettuce and white cabbage. However, we were able to plant chilis, kale, and lemon grass. The agricultural program at MRICRH supports us to be more self-sustaining by growing our own food. In addition, we have 10 families that are also receiving food from our agricultural program and MRICRH has also donated some of the vegetables to DEPDC’s HDS. Due to COVID-19 there is an increase in food insecurity and we are really happy that this program can support those in need during these difficult times.

At MRICRH we have also been busy with activities to support the kids. The children have been receiving swimming lessons. We want to ensure that the kids have the necessary skills to prevent drowning. They have also been receiving life skill training development. It’s amazing to watch the sense of empowerment that comes with education.

Thank you for taking the time to read our update. This program is essential in allowing DEPDC and MRICRH to carry out its mission. On behalf of all the children, teachers, and volunteers at MRICRH, we would like to say thank you to all our past, present, and future donors for your generous support. People like you represent the necessary partnerships that keep our centre flourishing. Please continue to spread the word about MRICRH by following, liking, and sharing our updates on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn!
