Safe Drinking Water for children in Ukraine

Access to clean and safe drinking water is a basic human right and an essential prerequisite for public health, dignity and community resilience, particularly in emergency situations. In the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine, this right is severely undermined in many locations, particularly in areas affected by large-scale displacement and damage to critical infrastructure.

Installing and rehabilitating water infrastructure directly supports the continuity of essential services in communities where water systems have been damaged, overburdened or affected by conflict-related disruptions. 

The Dnipropetrovsk Oblast remains one of the main regions hosting internally displaced persons (IDPs). A significant number of public institutions, including schools, kindergartens, hospitals and other social service facilities, still depend on poor-quality or untreated water sources, which limits their capacity to ensure safe, healthy and dignified conditions for both displaced people and host communities. Consequently, thousands of vulnerable individuals, including children, elderly people, people with disabilities, and displaced families, are exposed to serious yet preventable health risks.

Installing water purification systems or water towers is essential to prevent these health risks. For this reason, three water purification systems are currently being manufactured and installed in two schools and one healthcare centre in three villages in the Dnipropetrovsk region. Furthermore, work is ongoing to prepare for the future manufacturing and installation of a water tower in one of the villages in the Dnipropetrovsk region. This water tower is expected to provide the village residents, as well as the participants and personnel of the local preschool educational institution, with water reserves and access to clean water.

The compilation of the above-mentioned works will not only restore basic services and maintain the functionality of schools and health centre, but also support community resilience and protect public health by preventing disease outbreaks.
