Summary

IThis project aims to urgently provide safe drinking water to 70,000 refugees in Busuma Camp, Rutuyigi, which was established one month ago without access to potable water. The severe water shortage has led to outbreaks of cholera, dysentery, and diarrhea, causing daily deaths, especially among children and the elderly. The project will install an emergency water supply system to save lives, prevent disease, and restore dignity.

Challenge

Busuma Refugee Camp was rapidly established to respond to an emergency influx but was not equipped with a safe drinking water system. Currently hosting over 70,000 refugees, the camp relies on a single water tanker, which is insufficient to meet basic needs. As a result, refugees consume unsafe water, leading to outbreaks of cholera, dysentery, and diarrhea. These preventable diseases are causing daily deaths, particularly among children and the elderly.

Solution

The project will establish an emergency potable water supply system in Busuma Refugee Camp by installing water pipes, storage tanks, and distribution points connected to a safe water source. This will replace reliance on a single water tanker and ensure continuous access to clean water for 70,000 refugees. Improved water availability will reduce disease transmission, prevent cholera and diarrhea outbreaks, lower mortality rates, and restore basic hygiene and dignity.

Long-Term Impact

By providing reliable access to safe drinking water, the project will significantly reduce water-borne diseases and prevent future outbreaks in Busuma Refugee Camp. Improved hygiene and health will enhance the overall well-being of refugees, particularly children and the elderly. The infrastructure can support sustainable water management, build community resilience, and lay the foundation for safer, healthier living conditions in the camp over time.
