Building Bridges, Breaking Silence

By Sylvia Brade | Chief Happiness Officer, Village Impact

Hello Friends,

Thanks to your generous support, we successfully launched the two-day Safe Conversations Training pilot at San Marco Primary and Secondary Schools in Nakuru, Kenya this August—and the impact was extraordinary. Over 180 students participated, guided by 22 volunteer therapists from Australia, Ireland, the USA, and Canada, along with our dedicated Village Impact staff and our counselling team—Connie Kamonya, Milkah Mwende, and Joanne Tuwei.

This work was brought to life with the tireless effort of Charlotte Alston Legg, who developed the program and materials alongside our skilled Kenyan facilitators, Barnabus and Grace Achoki. With valuable input from our Village Impact counselors and staff, all trained in Safe Conversations, every element of the program was carefully crafted to foster connection, empathy, and emotional growth.

Safe Conversations is a step-by-step process for talking and listening that builds bridges—even when differences threaten to divide. These two days showed us how powerful this approach can be, not just in words but through movement, dreams, and trust.

Day One: Affirmations That Open Hearts

The first day focused on the power of affirmations, a core element of Safe Conversations. We introduced the principle of Zero Negativity, encouraging students, teachers, and administrators to replace criticism with kindness and empathy. Participants learned a simple but profound framework—how small words of appreciation can build meaningful connections.

One of the most touching moments came from a Deputy Principal at the secondary school. Standing before the group, he admitted that he had never thanked his wife for holding their home together while he focused on work. That evening, inspired by the session, he called her.

“She cried,” he told us the next morning, his voice filled with emotion. “She said she never thought she’d hear those words from me.”

This simple act of affirmation did more than reconnect him with his wife—it sparked a shift in perspective. It showed teachers how their words could transform relationships, not just at home but in the classroom. And for students, seeing the Deputy Principal open up made him more than an authority figure—it made him human.

The students embraced this lesson wholeheartedly, surprising even themselves. One student, grinning from ear to ear, said, “I didn’t know saying nice things would feel this good!” It was a moment of realization—not just for him but for everyone present. The students saw that kindness and understanding isn’t just something you give; it’s a gift that enriches both the giver and the receiver. They began to understand the power of words to shift their own perspective, leaving them feeling lighter, more connected, and genuinely joyful.

Day Two: Puppets, Frustrations, and Dreams

On the second day, we moved deeper into the Safe Conversations framework by teaching students how to express a frustration constructively. This is where the sock puppets—which the kids made themselves— stole the show, providing a playful, non-threatening way for students to express emotions they might have otherwise kept bottled up.

Through these puppets, students shared challenges they faced—strained home lives, fear of punishment, and mistrust of authority figures. One student said through his puppet, “Sometimes, I don’t like coming to school because the teachers don’t listen.” Another added, “It’s hard to talk about problems at home. No one understands.”

These weren’t easy conversations, but they were necessary. As students voiced their frustrations, they felt lighter—finally seen and heard. Teachers began to listen differently, realizing that hearing their students’ frustrations was the first step toward rebuilding trust.

Then came the dreams. As students transitioned from frustrations to aspirations, their voices grew stronger:

“I want to be a neurosurgeon.”
“I want to become a pilot.”
“I want to help others as a counselor.”

It was inspiring to hear these bold declarations, reminding us that even in difficult circumstances, the human spirit refuses to be limited. As Ann Kihara, one of our visiting therapists, reflected: “With such strong, resilient, and adventurous young women (and men) in Kenya, our world is going to change more than we can imagine. Go, Gen Z!”

Healing Through Dance: A Language of Resilience

Between sessions, students expressed themselves through dance. This wasn’t just for fun—it was their way of processing emotions and challenges.

Therapist Sharon Lack captured it beautifully: “They danced as if each movement was a way to release the weight they carried.” Watching them, it was clear that movement was their language of healing—a joyful expression beyond words. As we saw them leap and twirl with abandon, we could only hope they never stop dancing.

Challenges and Lessons Learned

While the program was a success, it wasn’t without its challenges. Some students struggled to trust teachers enough to share frustrations, referencing past experiences with corporal punishment or name-calling. Teachers acknowledged that the concept of Zero Negativity felt foreign, but many expressed a genuine willingness to embrace new approaches to communication and discipline.

We also encountered language barriers, as we discovered that parts of the training materials were too complex for this setting where english reading comprehension was low. Moving forward, we’ll incorporate Swahili and use culturally relevant examples to ensure the content resonates with every student, no matter their language proficiency.

These challenges became valuable lessons, helping us adapt, listen, and grow. With every insight gained, we are refining the program to ensure it becomes a lasting tool for change.

The Road Ahead: Expanding Safe Conversations

This two-day experience was just the beginning. We saw firsthand how affirmations build bridges, how naming frustrations creates release, and how movement becomes a language of healing. Thanks to your support, these students now have tools to express themselves, connect more deeply, and believe in their futures.

Our next steps are clear: we will continue gathering feedback from students, teachers, and therapists to refine the program further. We are considering training teachers and the school’s Board of Management—equivalent to a Parent-Teacher Association—so they can help carry this work forward.

Together, we are building communities where every voice matters, every frustration is heard, and every child knows they are seen. Thank you for being part of this journey. Your support makes it possible to turn small conversations into lasting transformations.

With deep gratitude,

P.S. Our team is hard at work on a video that captures the heart and spirit of the training, and I can’t wait to share it with you. Keep an eye on your inbox—this is just the beginning of the Safe Conversations story!
