Since our last update, S-CRAM has moved from groundwork into active partnership-building.
Conversations with local Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Ikorodu about apprenticeship placements have progressed to the next stage: eight local businesses are now reviewing proposed placement arrangements covering up to 24 apprenticeship places, a key step before formal agreements are concluded.
This follows directly from the needs assessment and consultations with participants completed in our last phase, during which young mothers identified tailoring, hairstyling and retail as their preferred pathways.
At the same time, preparatory work has begun on the support that will make participation possible for these young mothers: an on-site micro-crèche and a transport stipend mechanism. These respond to two barriers repeatedly identified by participants themselves: childcare responsibilities, and the cost and safety of travelling to training.
Our earlier health outreach continues to underpin the programme: 98 girls reached with menstrual hygiene and mental well-being education, 86 dignity kits distributed, and 60 girls offered confidential HIV testing. This outreach established the health and safeguarding foundation on which the livelihoods component is now building.
Where we need support: Fundraising remains our most urgent priority. Funding is now particularly important for the participant-support components, the crèche and transport stipends, that will determine whether young mothers can take up and remain in apprenticeship placements once agreements are signed. Every gift helps remove the practical barriers between a placement opportunity and actual participation.
