The project is to establish more than 4000 rural beekeepers in Kaduna state of Nigeria. The will be formed into an enterprise that would be involved in packaging honey in small sachets of 20 mls as a source of income generation. The enterprise will be the first of its kind in Nigeria and would be developed, managed and owned by the rural youth beekeepers. This will serve a sustainable source for jobs for the youths.
Due to high rate of poverty and lack of jobs and inadequate or no means of getting food by youths of the target communities, the youths engage in rat hunting through bush burning. Some of them migrate to urban centers in search for jobs that are not forthcoming and there by causing more problems in cities. Despite the fact that bees produce seven by-products ,due to the fear of bee stings, beekeeping is a neglected agricultural enterprise (even by the government).
The project will involve the youths in developing themselves into an apex organization that would develop into a beekeeping enterprise and would be managed by them.Through this, they will stop the action of bush burning and killing of bush rats for food. They will also see the need not to migrate from their communities to urban centers in search of jobs that are not there. There the project, the youths will develop sustainable income generation activities and would also involve other youths
The long term impact would be that the youths will operate an enterprise that would sustain them , the environment and the youths will support the livelihoods of their communities farming families
