Summary

Bangladesh’s coastal communities face regular threats from cyclones, tidal surges, river erosion, and other climate-related disasters. These challenges are particularly severe in coastal islands such as Char Lata, Patuakhali, where families often experience both environmental and economic vulnerability.

As part of its continued efforts to strengthen the resilience of coastal communities, OBHIZATRIK Foundation introduced an innovative tree-planting initiative in Char Lata. Under this initiative, when a child is born in the community, OBHIZATRIK Foundation gives the family a tree as a birth gift. The family plants the tree in their yard, and the tree is named after the child.

This initiative connects environmental protection with the life and growth of children, creating a lasting emotional connection between families and nature.

Challenge

People living in coastal areas of Bangladesh face natural disasters as a regular part of their lives. Cyclones, tidal flooding, erosion, and other climate-related events can damage homes, farmland, trees, and livelihoods.

These disasters also contribute to economic hardship. When families lose their homes, crops, livestock, or sources of income, recovering from each disaster becomes increasingly difficult. The loss of natural vegetation further reduces the protection that communities receive from their surrounding environment.

Therefore, coastal communities need solutions that are not only environmentally beneficial but also locally meaningful and sustainable. Encouraging families to grow and care for trees can help create stronger connections between communities and their natural surroundings.

Solution

OBHIZATRIK Foundation developed a simple but meaningful “Tree for Every Child” initiative in Char Lata. Whenever a new child is born in the community, the Foundation provides a tree to the child's family as a special gift.

The family plants the tree in their own yard and names it after the child. The tree may be a fruit-bearing tree or another suitable local species that can grow well in the coastal environment.

The initiative creates a unique relationship between the child, the family, and the tree. As the child grows, the tree grows alongside them. Family members are encouraged to care for the tree as part of their daily lives, rather than seeing it simply as a plantation or environmental activity.

Through this approach, tree planting becomes part of family life and creates a personal sense of responsibility for protecting and nurturing nature.

Long-Term Impact

The initiative aims to create both environmental and social benefits for coastal communities.
