Single father of two receives prosthetic device

By Elizabeth Neufeld | Vice President of Strategy and GrowthC

William walking for the first time w/device!

William is a 32 year old diabetic patient from Zacapa, Guatemala, who is also a single father of two young children. He had an amputation due to complications with his diabetes on December 1, 2015. He received his first prosthetic device just a few short weeks ago. As William tells it, without this critical device, he stuggled to continue his work as a dairy salesman. He needed to drive his motorcycle to different locations and had trouble doing this without the prosthesis. Now with it, he is able to return to work and can continue his studies. Along with working full time, he is studying law at a Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala in Zacapa. His goal is to become a lawyer and help people.

ROMP is an eleven year old nonprofit that manufactures and distributes custom prosthetic and orthotic devices to thousands of the western hemisphere’s most vulnerable individuals, who would otherwise not be able to access this critical health care. The World Health Organization estimates that 80% of the world’s amputees live in developing countries, and yet less than 3% have access to prosthetic care.

ROMP remains committed to finding a sustainable solution which addresses the lack of prosthetic services in resource poor areas. In order to do this, they provide ongoing training and education to individuals in these areas, who are interested in prosthetics as a career. They also work with manufacturers to secure the best products for patients at their clinics.

In 2007, ROMP built a world class Orthotics & Prosthetics facility in Guatemala, which is open full time and has had over  5000 patient visits. This has become a regional center of excellence for patients, students, and practitioners and is managed by highly trained local individuals.

ROMP is currently looking to expand operations, develop a ROMP provider network in developing countries, and implement the use of technology as a complement to traditional clinical care. However, doing so requires quite a bit of capital. It is because of donors like you, that we are able to move these disruptive programs forward.

Thank you again and please come visit us! We love to show off our work in Guatemala, Ecuador, and Mexico.

Warm Regards,

The ROMP Staff
