Summary

The goal is to restore three non-functional boreholes in Ogodo, Ankpa LGA, Kogi State. These boreholes are currently abandoned due to failed generators that previously powered them. This project will replace the generators with solar-powered systems to provide a sustainable and eco-friendly solution for clean water access. Solar energy will reduce maintenance costs and reliance on fossil fuels. In addition, the project will replace pipes and re-drill to clear debris and restore functionality.

Challenge

Ogodo, in Ankpa LGA, Kogi State, faces a major water access issue. The community's three boreholes have been abandoned due to malfunctioning generators that powered them and are now beyond repair. The lack of clean water forces residents to rely on unsafe water sources, resulting in waterborne diseases and significant hardship. Over 3,500 people are directly affected by the unreliable water supply, especially women and children who spend hours collecting water from distant sources.

Solution

This project will restore the three non-functional boreholes by replacing the broken generators with solar-powered systems. Solar energy is an ideal solution because it is sustainable, eco-friendly, and reduces dependence on fossil fuels. The project will install solar-powered pumps to efficiently extract water from the boreholes, and additional rubber tanks will be added to improve water storage to be able to meet the water needs of the community for years to come.

Long-Term Impact

The long-term impact includes improved public health, as clean water reduces waterborne diseases. It will save maintenance costs and dependence on fossil fuels, ensuring the boreholes remain functional for years. Solar energy will contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions. The community, especially women and children, will benefit from having more time for education/productive work, leading to improved livelihoods and economic opportunities for over 3,500 residents.
