2025 is the year that Mama Dragons is strengthening our roots, building on the close-knit, one-on-one support that first defined Mama Dragons. As we move into 2025, we're making our community's safety our top priority by transitioning our online spaces to a more secure platform beyond Facebook. With your support, we can create a protected space where mothers of LGBTQ+ children can safely connect, learn, and empower one another to celebrate their kids with love and without fear.
LGBTQ+ youth face unprecedented challenges-from legislative attacks to barriers in healthcare and education. LGBTQ+ Facebook groups have been specifically targeted by individuals seeking to infiltrate and exploit membership data, often leading to doxxing or coordinated online harassment campaigns. We're taking a bold step to protect our community by transitioning away from Facebook to a secure platform where we can reach more families who can connect, learn, and grow together without fear.
Mama Dragons provides opportunities for parents of LGBTQ+ youth to grow on their journey to acceptance, affirmation, and empowerment. Our roots come from one-to-one conversations between mothers who wanted to embrace their support for their children when they came out. This project will help Mama Dragons reach into communities where mothers may not know this type of support exists, educate them about LGBTQ+ lives and envelop them in a supportive and secure community with like-minded mothers.
Mama Dragons succeeds in expanding the number of affirming households with LGBTQ+ children through the education of mothers. Affirming parenting is the most impactful way to lower LGBTQ+ children self-harming behaviors including depression, homelessness, isolation, and suicide. With nearly 5 million children identifying as LGBTQ+, there is a critical need for parents to have a supportive and secure community with other parents where our families can connect safely.
