20 Years of Returning Children to School

By Judy Akoth | Project Leader

In 2004, Turning Point enrolled a group of children into local government primary schools, several of these children struggled to adjust to school-life and dropped out of school. The organization therefore recognized the need for a specialized interim class where former street or out-of-school children were prepared to return to mainstream education. To meet this need, Turning Point formed the Transition Programme that supports out-of-school children to return to school and complete their primary education.

Meet Peter and Shadrack, one of the first children to join the programme. Peter and his 5 siblings could not stay in school because their parents’ little earnings only afforded them a roof over their heads and some food. After staying out of school for 2 years, Peter and his younger brother, Shadrack, got the chance to join the Transition Programme. After a year of mentorship and being supported to catch up with learning, the boys were enrolled into a government primary school where they continued with their education. When they completed their primary education, Turning Point, supported the boys to attend secondary school to further their education. The boys passed their final secondary school exams and were qualified to join the university. They are currently practicing auditors. Peter is a private auditor and Shadrack works at the office of the auditor general.

They are among the 505 children that Turning Point has returned to school over the 20 years of working in Kibera slum in Nairobi, Kenya.

Thank you to our friends and supporters for helping us re-write the stories of so many children in Kibera.
