Josephine, who was studying in Senior Two, began experiencing severe and persistent abdominal pain in 2023. For an extended period, her symptoms remained unresolved despite seeking medical attention, resulting in prolonged suffering and interruptions to her normal life.
After several medical consultations and investigations, Josephine was finally diagnosed with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), gastritis, and a Grade IV hiatus hernia. This diagnosis revealed that her condition was more serious than initially understood and that she requires urgent specialized medical intervention, including surgery, to correct the underlying problem and prevent further complications.
Before the progression of her illness, Josephine was a focused and hardworking learner with a promising academic future. Despite facing health challenges, she demonstrated exceptional commitment to her studies and achieved a First Grade in the 2024 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE). Her academic performance reflected her determination, intelligence, and ambition. She had successfully transitioned into secondary education with a dream of becoming a nurse and using her future career to serve others.
However, the worsening nature of her medical condition has made it increasingly difficult for Josephine to continue with her education. The constant abdominal pain, discomfort, and inability to fully participate in school activities have affected her concentration, attendance, and overall learning experience. Due to the severity of her illness and the absence of financial resources to access the required treatment, Josephine has since stopped attending school and is currently staying at home while awaiting support for medical intervention.
Josephine comes from a highly vulnerable family background. She is cared for by her widowed mother, who is the sole provider for the household and survives on an income of less than USD 2 per day. The family struggles to meet basic needs, including food, education expenses, and healthcare costs. The specialized treatment required for Josephine is far beyond what her family can afford, leaving her dependent on support from well-wishers and partners.
The estimated cost of Josephine’s treatment is UGX 6,000,000 (approximately USD 1,765). This amount will cover the required surgical procedure, medical examinations, hospital care, medication, and follow-up support necessary for her recovery. Without timely treatment, Josephine’s condition may continue worsening, further affecting her health, education, emotional wellbeing, and future opportunities.
In response to this urgent need, a fundraising initiative was established to mobilize resources to support Josephine’s medical treatment and help her regain her health. The goal of the campaign is not only to address her immediate medical needs but also to restore her ability to return to school, continue her education, and pursue her dream of becoming a nurse.
During the last three months, efforts have been made to raise awareness about Josephine’s situation and mobilize financial support. However, the response has remained limited, with only USD 0.32 received against the total target of USD 1,765. Because the amount received is insufficient to contribute toward the required medical procedure, the funds have not yet been withdrawn or utilized.

During the reporting period, the project made progress in documenting Josephine’s medical journey, creating awareness, and mobilizing support toward her urgent medical needs. One of the key achievements was the successful identification and confirmation of her medical condition through specialized assessment, which provided clarity on the cause of her prolonged suffering. The diagnosis of GERD, gastritis, and a Grade IV hiatus hernia helped establish the urgent need for surgical intervention and guided the development of a targeted support plan to address her health challenges.
The project also successfully developed and shared a fundraising appeal aimed at mobilizing the required UGX 6,000,000 (approximately USD 1,765) needed for Josephine’s surgery, hospital care, medication, and follow-up treatment. Through this initiative, Josephine’s story was shared with potential supporters and well-wishers in an effort to generate resources that would enable her to access timely medical care and regain her quality of life.
Continuous follow-up has been maintained with Josephine and her family to monitor her condition, understand the challenges they are facing, and provide encouragement during this difficult period. Despite these achievements, the project has not yet achieved its intended medical outcome due to inadequate financial support. Only USD 0.32 has been received against the fundraising target of USD 1,765, which is insufficient to begin the required treatment process. As a result, Josephine has not yet undergone surgery and continues to experience the effects of her condition.
The limited funding has had a significant impact on Josephine’s life. Her health challenges have forced her to discontinue her education, and she is currently staying at home instead of attending secondary school. The interruption of her studies has affected her academic progress and her hope of achieving her dream of becoming a nurse. In addition, the continued illness has placed emotional pressure on Josephine and her family, who remain uncertain about when she will be able to access the treatment she urgently needs.
While the project has succeeded in creating awareness and bringing attention to Josephine’s situation, the ultimate goal of restoring her health and enabling her return to school remains unmet. Continued fundraising and support are urgently needed to transform the progress made so far into meaningful recovery and renewed hope for Josephine’s future.
Current Situation
At present, Nankya Josephine’s condition remains unchanged, and she continues to face significant health and educational challenges due to the lack of resources to access the required medical treatment. Although her condition has been diagnosed and the need for urgent surgery established, the intervention has not yet been carried out because the necessary funds have not been secured.
Josephine is currently at home and has discontinued her secondary education as a result of persistent pain and the inability to continue with normal school activities. This interruption has affected a bright learner who had demonstrated strong academic potential through her achievement of a First Grade in the 2024 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE). Being away from school has not only delayed her academic progress but has also affected her confidence, motivation, and hope for achieving her dream of becoming a nurse.
Her family continues to face immense challenges in supporting her recovery. Josephine’s widowed mother remains the primary caregiver and has limited financial capacity to meet the cost of specialized medical care. The family continues to depend on external support to access the surgery and related medical services required to restore Josephine’s health.
The delay in accessing treatment increases the risk of further health complications and prolongs the emotional and financial burden experienced by Josephine and her family. Immediate support remains critical to ensure that she receives the medical intervention needed to recover, return to school, and continue building her future.
4. Funding Update
The fundraising initiative was established with a target of USD 1,765 (approximately UGX 6,000,000) to cover Josephine’s required medical expenses, including surgery, hospital care, diagnostic tests, medication, and follow-up support.
During the last three months, the campaign has received only USD 0.32 from one donor against the total fundraising target. Due to the very limited amount received, the funds have not been withdrawn or utilized because they are insufficient to support any meaningful component of the required medical treatment.
The remaining funding gap currently stands at USD 1,764.68, leaving the project unable to proceed with Josephine’s surgery and recovery plan. Continued fundraising efforts are therefore necessary to mobilize the resources required to address her urgent medical needs.
The project continues to appeal to individuals, partners, and well-wishers to support Josephine’s recovery. Any contribution will bring her closer to accessing treatment, regaining her health, and returning to school.
