Restoring Eyesight to Children in Africa

Investing in a PlusOptiX Sight Screening Device presents a significant opportunity for Eyes of Africa and the broader African educational system. This report outlines the current challenges in vision screening, the benefits of purchasing the device, and its potential impact on future generations.

Currently, Eyes of Africa rents the PlusOptiX device and incurs costs for each child screened. This model is akin to a data service, which poses financial constraints on our ability to provide comprehensive vision screenings. Poor vision is a major barrier to both education and employment. Many children and families in underprivileged areas are either unaware of their vision difficulties or lack the financial means to seek corrective measures. As a result, these children often fall behind in school, leading to increased dropout rates and perpetuating the cycle of poverty.

Acquiring a PlusOptiX screening device will eliminate ongoing screening costs, allowing for greater flexibility in conducting eye assessments. This ownership will enable us to provide sight screenings for children anytime and anywhere, without the burden of additional expenses. The funds saved can then be redirected toward essential post-eye care services, including:

• Glasses
• Medications
• Surgical interventions
• Appointments with optometrists and specialists

By addressing vision impairments and their root causes, we can significantly enhance children’s learning experiences. Improved vision will empower them to thrive academically and socially, enabling them to reach their full potential. Furthermore, this initiative will help reduce the inequalities that hinder many children, allowing them to become productive, independent members of their communities.

Hello Friends! 

We all know the line, "Every donation counts," but actually, "Every child counts."

Haran, the youngest child we've screened to date, a "just turned" four-year-old, who recently received his first pair of glasses through Eyes of Africa. Haran is the third child in his family to receive glasses from Eyes of Africa. While we didn't identify his need from a school screening, it was an obvious decision after meeting the family at a recent check up, that we should take Haran to a Developmental Optometrist for a screening. 

Haran's situation is not unique. Across Africa, children like him are struggling with undiagnosed vision problems, which significantly impact their ability to learn and thrive in school. By providing timely screenings and access to glasses, we are breaking down barriers to education and empowering our children to succeed.

And for Haran, we know that in a few years he'll be starting school with the best possible opportunity to actively participate in the classroom and with his peers. 

Every child deserves the chance to see the world with clarity. Our impact extends beyond the individual child to their families and communities, as improved vision leads to better academic performance, increased confidence, and enhanced opportunities for future success.

As a grassroots organization, we heavily rely on the generosity of donors to support our programs and expand our reach.
