Eyes of Africa's purpose is to sight screen and identify children in need of eye care and to promote the importance of eye health and protection in some of Africa's most vulnerable communities. The importance of a child's vision cannot be underestimated as it affects every part of their everyday life. Addressing visual impairment at a young age will assist the child to become productive independent members of their communities and society at large.
Poor vision is a clear barrier to education and employment, and most children and their families underprivileged areas are often unaware of their difficulties. Because of little to no access to opticians and/or glasses, these children fall behind in school or eventually drop out and are thrown back into a cycle of poverty.
The most common global eye problem is uncorrected vision. This presents a major opportunity for change, as 80% of all causes of visual impairment is preventable or curable by identifying and correcting with something as simple as a pair of glasses. Screening by professionals will allow us to identify a child's individual need and training will be provided to the child and their family to ensure correct use of the method of care.
By tackling vision impairment and the root cause of their learning difficulties, this will provide children with the ability to live life to the fullest, reduce inequalities they face on a daily basis and assist the child to become productive independent members of their communities and society at large.
