Unleashing the world's underground forests thanks to Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR), a regenerative approach pioneered in Niger with a group of farmers, combined with holistic grazing management and water-harvesting techniques that can completely transform once degraded landscapes. From Senegal to Somalia, India to East Timor and beyond, millions of farmers are learning about and applying principles which restore tree and grass cover with amazing results! Now let's help Ghana.
The majority of rural households are dependent on rain-fed subsistence agriculture. Production decreases due to tree cover lost, lack of water and poor soils. Environmental degradation, negative farming practices, climate change create land fragmentation and ownership conflicts, increasing rural-urban migration and food shortages, vulnerability. It has far reaching consequences on the livelihood of people, productivity, food and nutrition security, people's health and the overall wellbeing.
Natural resources (soil, water, vegetation) need to be sustainably managed. The FMNR approach is a low-cost, sustainable land-restoration technique used to combat poverty and hunger amongst poor subsistence farmers by increasing food, timber availability, building resilience to climate change. It involves the systematic regeneration and management of trees and shrubs from tree stumps, roots and seeds. By training, equipping farmers, supporting women through small loans to increase livelihood.
Collective action for land restoration and biodiversity protection, innovative pratices. The project will integrate different but complementary activities for synergy. Communities will be facilitated to identify their vulnerabilities to hazards and to develop plans to reduce the impacts. The project will promote behavioural change around natural resource management and environmental protection through training, community sensitization, radio messages and logistical support to communities.
