The COVID-19 pandemic severely limited rural health centers' access to contraceptive options for women in Bolivia. For just $20 each, the Global Midwife Education Foundation can purchase and deliver safe and effective long-acting reversible contraceptive devices to health centers so that women who want them have access.
The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated healthcare resource limitations for women. In particular, limited contraceptive access in rural Bolivia led to a significant rise in teen pregnancies and closely spaced pregnancies, increasing the risk of maternal and infant mortality, malnutrition, and poverty. In Bolivia, nearly 1 in 10 adolescent girls become pregnant and almost half have unmet contraceptive needs.
GMEF partners with rural health centers by providing birth control supplies and training providers in their use.
When girls and women are able to choose when they get pregnant they can plan their lives, stay in school, work, and care for themselves and the children they already have. This is one of the most powerful tools we have to fight poverty and empower women.
