Since our previous report, field activities at the Reef Star restoration site in Varadero have focused on maintenance and monitoring.
Maintenance dives were successfully carried out on all 400 Reef Stars from the first 100 and the 300 installed in September. During the visits to the sites, the structures were carefully cleaned to remove sediment and algae that could compete with coral fragments or limit their growth. This maintenance is a critical step to ensure optimal conditions during the early and most vulnerable stages of coral development.
During maintenance of the original 100 Reef Stars, we observed coral growth, an encouraging sign that the restoration structures are functioning as intended. In addition, we recorded a greater presence of marine life using the structures as habitat.
A three-month monitoring cycle was completed for the 300 newly installed Reef Stars. Monitoring and maintenance activities were carried out successfully, confirming good structural condition and healthy early-stage coral development across the site.
All of these activities were carried out with the active participation of four members of the local Bocachica community, who continue to play a key role in the project. Their technical skills, confidence in underwater work, and understanding of the restoration process are growing rapidly.
