As part of its mission to promote the rights of people marginalized by socio-economic development through empowerment, the NGO ODDPH, in collaboration with SODEPA (Solidarity for Development and Peace), has been supporting in Goma, since September 2025, a vocational training project in tailoring and dressmaking aimed at a first cohort of beneficiaries from disadvantaged backgrounds, notably girls and women affected by the hardships of war in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The prolonged armed conflict and persistent socio-economic instability have severely affected girls and women from disadvantaged communities, leaving many without access to education, employment opportunities, or sustainable sources of income. In eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, war-related violence, displacement, and poverty have deepened their vulnerability, limiting their ability to meet basic needs and participate in socio-economic life.
This project addresses the problem by equipping vulnerable girls and women with practical, marketable skills in tailoring and dressmaking that enable them to generate sustainable income and achieve economic independence. Through structured vocational training, beneficiaries gain hands-on experience, professional guidance, and confidence to either start their own small businesses or access employment opportunities. By improving their livelihoods, the project reduces economic vulnerability.
In the long term, the project will foster economic self-reliance for women and girls, reduce poverty, and strengthen community resilience. By promoting skills, entrepreneurship, and social inclusion, it contributes to lasting peace, improved living standards, and intergenerational empowerment in conflict-affected communities.
