Adapting to meet the needs of girls

We have exciting news!

Over the past three months FICH has been working closely with beneficiairies, teachers, and others in the community in order to understand how our education program could support them better. We learned that while our approach to mentoring is unique and impactful, it had room for improvement. This led to many team discussions, a lot of planning, and finally a new and improved youth education program called LEAD: Leadership, Excellence, Advancement, Discovery.

LEAD still targets girls in secondary schools in Northern Uganda. In fact, our beneficiaires will remain the same; only the approach will change. The purpose of the program is to inspire girls to become leaders in their community and perform well in school through weekly mentorship sessions facilitated by FICH team members and Mentor Teachers. Weekly sessions are interactive, informational, and help girls to discover more about themselves and their dreams. We believe that through regular, positive interaction we can help girls to become leaders, to be excellent students and community members, to advance themselves personally and professionally, and to discover more about themselves and the world.

Our approach focuses on four key strategies:

Positive Youth Engagement: This approach is fundamental to working with youth. It focuses on youths’ strengths and opportunities for development rather than on things youth do wrong or issues that need to be solved. PYD focuses on surrounding youth with positive experiences, education, opportunities, and relationships that support their development
Asset Based Approach: An asset-based approach focuses on developing youth’s “assets,” or positive experiences and qualities that are proven to influence youth development. This approach applies a framework of 40 developmental assets to measure youth’s well-being and likelihood of success
Continual learning: Skill-building relies on allowing youth to continually build on the knowledge and skills being developed. Sessions will be linked to an underlying theme in order to support the continual learning process.
Safety: The safety of youth participants is paramount. Youths' phsycial and emotional safety is neccessary for personal growth and success. All adults and youth involved will be made aware of their individual responsibility to promote safety.

Empowering young girls to be leaders

FICH education program responds to the needs of marginalized children and youth through opportunities to obtain second-chance education and job skills training to comprehend the understanding of future generation.

PROGRAM IMPACT IN THE LAST THREE MONTHS

PROMOTION OF READING CULTURE, FICH Partnered with Peace Corps volunteers and other governmental stakeholders in the effort to promote reading culture and love for reading among students through a national education program called DEAR Day. Over 2,000 school going children and students were exposed to reading materials and stakeholders have pledged to carry on their obligations on what hinders convenient reading among children and adults.

MENTORSHIP, FICH exposed over 50 marginalized girls to role models for guidance and counselling, mentorship and peer mentorship through a platform called the ‘Holiday Challenge Sharing Event’ which brings the girls together to share their experiences, challenges and derive solutions for these challenges together through the guidance of their role models every school holiday break.

REUSABLE SANITARY PADS TRAINING, FICH, with the help of experienced volunteers from Peace Corps, educated over 150 girls and women both in schools and the community on menstrual hygiene and making reusable sanitary pads which is a sustainable skill that highly contributes to a girl`s retention at school

MENTORS` TRAINING, for a multiplier effect, FICH trained mentors in mentorship and counselling skills. These mentors are the teachers of the girls and some community icons that the girls will easily reach to with their challenges for proper guidance. These trained mentors will be able to impart mentoring skills to the girls so that they will become role models to their fellow girls.

KEY LESSON LEARNT

A coordinated effort by partners and stakeholders together yields the best outcome and sustainability of any community development program. In our close contact with District Officials, School Administration and the District Education Officer, FICH has become more visible and implementing our activities has been successul.

KEY CHALLENGE

There is high demand for FICH second chance education in other conflict affected communities in Northern Uganda other than Oyam district, where FICH currently operates. This is because of FICH's current limited capacity to operate in a wider geographic location.

FICH preparing future of work & assisting girls in conflicts obtain competency in the job market

Supplement to Supporting children & girls in conflicts with second chance education, Foundation for Inclusive Community Help (FICH) is deepening its strategy to prepare future of work and assisting girls and women acquire necessary skills, knowledge and rightful behaviors to compete in the job market. FICH is now addressing multitudes of barriers in a holistic and integrated ways through livelihood skills development, education, inclusion of boys and men as key stakeholders, markets and financial access for girls out of schools through careful planning, design and mobilization, access to sexual reproductive health information and services, promotion of gender roles equality and transformation in the communities and support to early childhood development programs for children age 0-6 years in conflict affected areas of Uganda.

There is also more investment in promoting equality and addressing education inequality that affect girls in communities and families.

With your support through GlobalGiving, FICH is now strongly determine and contributing to ensure inclusive education, promotion of gender equality and empower girls and young women economically and promoting employment opportunities among interest groups in post and conflict affected areas of Northern Uganda.
