Karmirhath Hospital is located at Gaibandha, a small rural town in the North-West Corner of Bangladesh. The hospital has been serving the people of Gaibandha and the surrounding districts since 1986. The Eye Care Section of the Hospital holds Cataract Surgery Session every month. During the last three months 1,544 eye patients were treated at the hospital. Cataract operations were conducted on 61 patients.

Case Study:

  1. Zorina (not her real name);

Zorina, 55 years of age, is a widow and has five children. Her husband died five years ago. She lives about 20 kilometers away from Karmirhath hospital. Zorina is very poor. She had problems in her eyes for quite a few years. She did not go to any doctor having no money. About a year ago, her son took her to a doctor who told her that she might be having Cataract and advised her to go to Karmirhath hospital. Her son who himself is very poor, took her to Karmirhath hospital. An Eye Specialist examined Zorina and recommended her for Surgery. Surgeon performed surgery on both of her eyes free of charges.

  1. Shamsu (not his real name):

Shamsu, 70 years old, is a resident of Masterpara in Gaibandha town. He was engaged in Agriculture profession. He developed problems in his eyes for long time. For long, doctors could not diagnose his eye problems. About four months ago, Shamsu came to Karmirhath hospital. Dr. Abdus Samad, a retired Eye Specialist examined Shamsu’s eyes. After a number of tests, Dr. Samad came to conclusion that Shamsu has been suffering from Glaucoma, an eye disease related to pressure on eyes. It’s a complicated eye disease and very difficult to cure. However, doctor has suggested some medicine that may give some relief to his eyes.

Free treatment were given to both the patients. This has been possible due to liberal donations from GlobalGiving.
