Impact report

By Bernadette Martin | Corporate Engagement Manager

Hurricane Florence made landfall on September 14th as a Category 1 hurricane, and caused massive destruction to North and South Carolina. As wind speeds tapered, it was eventually downgraded to a tropical depression in the following days. Even though wind speeds weakened, the rains did not, and caused massive flooding throughout rural areas of North and South Carolina. Hurricane Florence attributed to:

  • 47 deaths
  • Thousands of residents relying on coal-fired electricity remained without power for several weeks
  • The top 10 costliest storms in the United States
  • Property damage and economic losses in North & South Carolina reached approximately $17.9 billion

In response to Hurricane Florence, World Vision sent 12 full truckloads of emergency relief supplies to the impacted area, which included Fayetteville, Kinston, Jacksonville, Lumberton, and Wilmington in North Carolina, as well as Myrtle Beach in South Carolina.

Relief supplies included food, water, beds, blankets, pillows, sleeping bags, hygiene items, clothing, school supplies, and toys. These relief supplies have been distributed through local partners and churches to those in need.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors and local partners, we have been able to serve 4,750 children & 3,750 adults!
