ACTIVITY REPORT – CRESCA

Recreational, Social and Cultural Animal Center

As we do every year—and in a firm commitment to transparency in the use of resources—we held a public annual report presentation before our community, where we shared the results of our actions.

For 13 years, we have worked for animal welfare through the CRESCA program, which began as the Canine Rescue Center and evolved into what is now the Recreational, Social and Cultural Animal Center.

At CRESCA, we promote animal welfare based on four fundamental pillars: adoption, spaying/neutering, responsible ownership, and community co-responsibility. Through these, we contribute to key issues such as health, education, the environment, and community development.

 RESCUES AND ADOPTIONS

During this year, we took in 73 dogs, prioritizing critical cases such as malnutrition, abuse, or injury. While we would love to help more, we maintain a limit aligned with our space and budget to ensure optimal conditions for the animals and visitors.

We’ve strengthened our rescue mechanism with the support of 26 responsible sponsors, who cover food, veterinary consultations, vaccinations, and other care. Some rescues are not officially counted as ours because the sponsors assume full responsibility for their upkeep.

Thanks to these efforts, 60 dogs have been adopted—some locally, others within the state, and even abroad in the United States and Germany.

 SPAYING/NEUTERING AND ITS IMPACT

Our spaying/neutering program has had a significant impact, with 1,029 surgeries performed, mostly through the State Health Department and Colorado State University, managed by the Municipal Government of Mulegé through the Municipal Tourism Office.

It’s estimated that these surgeries have prevented the birth of more than 5,000 street puppies, based on an average litter size of five (some litters are as large as 14).

These figures do not include sterilizations performed by private vets or directly by the State Health Department, which has historically collaborated with both the community and our organization—even before our formal creation.

Currently, there are other active groups in the municipality also working on this issue, which we celebrate and support.

COMMUNITY SERVICES

We offer several services to support the community:

• Care and recovery of sick pets when their owners cannot attend to them due to work or travel (owners only cover food and medical care).

• Loan of carriers to facilitate spay/neuter procedures.

• Transport of animals when owners have no means of transportation. This also applies to street dogs when a neighbor commits to taking responsibility.

SELF-SUSTAINABILITY AND SUPPORT RECEIVED

To diversify income, we built a pet crematorium, providing a dignified service while generating funds for our operations. This year, we conducted 118 cremations.

Thanks to an agreement with Veterinaria San Fernando, we offer this service at low cost and with great respect.

We also implemented a pet boarding service, with 34 services provided.

Additionally, we built 10 wooden dog houses, exchanged for food donations. These were made with community-donated materials. Special thanks to Imelda, Baja Jigs, and Mariscos El Inge.

To improve the animals’ nutrition, we signed agreements with Gran Pollo, Buen Pollo, Aquarios 2000, and Cuesta Hermanos, who donated 1,775.5 kg of chicken skin and fish scraps. From this total, we obtained about 50% yield in processed products such as cracklings and fish meal.

CENTER IMPROVEMENTS

This year:

• We renovated palm roofs to reduce heat.

• We created a safe play area for the dogs.

• We repaired the access road twice, thanks to Mr. Trino Gutiérrez.

• We reduced water costs thanks to donations from Pin Sarabia and Tonkas Grill.

MAJOR DONATIONS

This year, Nestlé Purina donated food, Additionally, thanks to Carolina and her friends, we received 380 more kilograms at Christmas.

This support significantly reduced our operating costs.

EDUCATION AND AWARENESS

We happily welcome school groups from elementary, middle, and high school levels, promoting education on responsible pet ownership and respect for animals. We are grateful to the teachers who organize these visits.

INTER-INSTITUTIONAL COLLABORATION

We are part of the Municipal Government’s Animal Welfare Committee in Mulegé, collaborating in spay/neuter campaigns and receiving support from Public Safety, Public Services, Firefighters, Civil Protection, and the Health Committee for critical rescues.

We have also shared our experience with rescue groups in Guerrero Negro and Bahía Tortugas, promoting animal welfare across the region.

While we believe in rescue, we know it is not a long-term solution. Investing in mass spaying/neutering and education will have a much greater impact in reducing the street dog and cat population.

Activities Carried Out in January

This month, CRESCA has worked tirelessly to ensure the well-being of the dogs that are part of our family. Here are some of the most relevant activities:

1. Caring for our furry friends

• We provided consistent food, water, and veterinary care to all the dogs sheltered at the center.
• Ivermectin was applied to all dogs to effectively control flea and tick infestations.
• We offered six cremation services for the pets of community members and municipal residents. This service is part of our local fundraising program.

2. Sterilizations

• With the support of the Health Department, we performed 81 free sterilizations at our facilities, thanks to collaboration with the state and municipal governments.
• In partnership with the Municipal Tourism Office and Colorado State University, we conducted the first day of a new campaign, sterilizing 18 pets.

3. Food collection and improvement

• We collected 158.5 kg of chicken skin, a fundamental resource for improving the protein intake of our dogs.
• We refined our fish meal preparation process by incorporating cooking and sun-drying, ensuring better product quality.

4. Donations and community support

• We sincerely thank “Cuesta Hermano” Fishery and Icehouse for their generous donation of 23 kg of fresh fish waste, a valuable contribution to feeding our dogs.
• This month, our sponsored pet program benefited 18 families who received support for feeding and veterinary care for their dogs, thanks to the commitment of kind-hearted individuals in our community.

5. Fundraising

• We organized a sale of wooden dog houses made from recycled wood donated by the community. The funds raised were used to purchase food and prepare fish meal.
