In July 2014, the Director of Easy R Equine Rescue received a call from a deputy at the Lubbock County Sheriff's Office. The deputy explained that he was on his way to pick up 5 young horses from an older couple who lived in the country and had 19 horses. Most the horses were underweight but apparently, these five were in the worst condition so were being seized. The deputy asked if we could take three of the five horses. We secured an emergency foster placement and agreed to to take them. Two of the horses were young fillies that were very underweight, malnourised, dehydrated, and scared. When seeing them for the first time, it was very difficult to imagine how a person could allow a living creature to get into such poor condition due to pure neglect. But instead of focusing on the injustice served to them, we immediately gave them names and planned their road to recovery.
Andi and Ginger were placed on a feeding plan with high quality hay and grain, given several rounds of de-wormer to rid them of their large load of intestinal parasites, seen by the equine dentist and farrier, and vaccinated. Even though they both would approach the person feeding in order to eat, they were, otherwise, distrustful of humans and moved away from any physical contact. Over the next many months, both girls consistently gained weight and muscle mass. But it has taken over a year for them to gain trust of the people around them. Easy R is very fortunate to have some great foster homes, and the home Andi and Ginger have been in is no exception. The foster "parent" has spent many hours over the past year working with these young horses, teaching them ground manners, teaching them to load and unload in a trailer, saddling them and working them in a round pen, and loving on them every day.
We are happy to report that Andi and Ginger were just placed last week in an adoptive home in Weatherford, Texas. And the best part is that they got adopted together! The person who adopted them is a highly skilled horse person and is excited about training them and teaching them a job. Both girls have grown into beautiful, young horses with a great deal of potential.
We feel very blessed to have been part of the rescue and recovery of these two special horses. The fact is, that if the local law enforcement agency had not intervened, and horse rescues like Easy R didn't exist, Andi and Ginger would have died of starvation/malnutrition on that property. And while we consider it a privilege to help in the rescue efforts of these two horses, it was an expensive endeavor. Specialized feed and all the veterinary, dental, and farrier care they received cost a significant amount of money. We are so grateful for the donors like you who give to Easy R so we can continue helping horses like Andi and Ginger. Every dollar helps. Every prayer is important. Every horse is special to us. Thank you for being part of our efforts. You are a huge part of our team.
