This project will save 80 adoptable dogs each month from high kill shelters being euthanized for space. These highly adoptable "second hand dogs" make "first rate pets" for thousands of families in the US. Paws New England helps to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome these dogs into New England families.
Daily, thousands of adoptable but unwanted dogs are euthanized in the deep south due to overcrowding in high kill shelters. Meanwhile, in the New England areas, families are paying $1,000-5,000 to buy dogs from breeders. Responsible transportation, vetting and adoption is needed to rehome these deep south dogs.
This project will pull dogs from high kill shelters in the south, treat them for any diseases they have and transport these dogs to New England where they will join their adoptive families. Each dog that goes through the program is spayed or neutered to ensure they do not have unwanted litters and increase the problem.
In the short 10 years that Paws New England has been working, they have managed to decrease the euthanasia rate in one rural shelter from 90% to single digit rates! This project will help to bring the effectiveness to multiple rural shelters, including the overcrowded Memphis Animal Services.
