The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation is planting thousands of fruit trees and provides horticultural training in the severely deforested municipality of Mococa, Brazil to create a sustainable source of healthy food for families while reforesting the region. Trees are planted at schools and community centers as well as distributed directly to families. Harvests provide quality, fresh nutrition to local families, and the trees fight climate change and provide critical habitat for local wildlife.
Ongoing deforestation in Brazil is causing climate-related disasters across the State of Sao Paolo, the country of Brazil, and the world as a whole. Mococa sits on the edge of the Brazilian rainforest and is in dire need of reforestation efforts to curb climate change and restore natural balance to the ecosystem. Also, the traditionally abundant fruits native only to this part of the world are threatened and becoming inaccessible to local people due to disappearing trees and high market prices.
Fruit trees planted in schools, public spaces, and family homes restore the canopy that once dominated this region. Trees cool the environment, provide habitat for wildlife, and create the conditions which effect not only Brazil but global climate patterns and temperatures. A return to traditional native fruits also encourages better nutrition while discouraging westernized packaged, processed foods. It discourages meat consumption, reducing the need to cut down trees to create cattle pastures.
We must plant trees NOW to save the environment for future generations. The tree canopy in Brazil is one of the most important natural resources on our planet, and deforestation for paper and petroleum products, urban sprawl, and cattle pasture is destroying it at an unprecedented rate. By planting trees now, we can slow down the impacts until we restore balance to this fragile ecosystem. We will also save native fruit tree varieties of this area that could otherwise be lost forever.
