The primary objective behind the renovation of The Ark's domestic violence shelter for abused women and sexually assaulted young girls is to marshal resources for the enhancement and fortification. This shelter, which has been in operation for more than 24 years, serves as a crucial haven for abused women, as well as young girls who have been victims of sexual assault. It stands as the sole operational domestic violence shelter in Ghana, catering not only to victims from various regions of the country but also extending its aid to victims of trafficking, with a particular focus on women and girls.
After a temporary closure in 2016, the shelter reestablished its operations in 2019 and has been consistently functional since then. Despite its extensive period of service, the shelter's infrastructure has remained largely unaltered and unfortified, especially in the past decade, primarily due to financial constraints. A significant proportion of the resources that are gathered for the shelter are predominantly allocated towards the assistance of victims and other beneficiaries. These provisions include covering medical expenses, providing nourishment, facilitating educational assistance, and offering skills training.
While no financial contributions have been secured for the project since its launch, The Ark Foundation is eagerly anticipating donations that will enable the realization of this endeavor. The ultimate aim of the project is to establish a secure and supportive environment within the facility, one that is conducive to the recovery and rehabilitation of survivors who are admitted.
