This quarter, Afyaplus started a baseline survey to assess the current state of school toilet facilities across the Iringa region, uncovering critical sanitation challenges that urgently need intervention. The survey covered 12 schools, including Ilala Primary, Kihesa Primary, Saba Saba Primary, Kihesa Secondary, Mkwawa Secondary, Viziwi Primary, Ilore Secondary, Miyomboni Secondary, and Ipogolo Secondary. Our findings revealed that many school toilets are in poor condition, lacking basic elements such as adequate water supply, privacy features, clean environments, and essential sanitary provisions like handwashing stations, soap, and even doors.
These critical conditions pose immediate health risks, leading to increased illness among students and teachers alike, which disrupts learning and impacts overall school performance. Students often face unhygienic, unsafe environments, which not only affect their physical health but also hinder concentration and academic engagement. The connection between school sanitation and academic success is well-documented; when students have access to clean, safe facilities, they are more likely to attend school consistently, perform better academically, and develop positive hygiene habits.
Afyaplus is committed to addressing these pressing challenges through our Renovating School Toilets Project. By rehabilitating these facilities, our goal is to create a safe, functional, and dignified space for students, encouraging a healthier school environment and supporting overall student well-being. Renovations will include upgrading infrastructure, installing proper ventilation, adding handwashing stations, ensuring reliable water access, and providing necessary supplies like soap. Privacy improvements, such as the installation of doors and partitions, are also a priority, especially for adolescent students who require appropriate facilities during their school day.
Our approach recognizes the broader impact that improved sanitation has not only on school attendance but also on long-term health outcomes and community well-being. As these renovations are carried out, Afyaplus will work with school management, local leaders, and students themselves to instill practices that sustain these improvements. By educating students on hygiene practices, involving them in the maintenance of these facilities, and reinforcing community responsibility, we aim to create a sustainable model of school sanitation management.
With the support of partners, stakeholders, and the broader community, Afyaplus is determined to make a significant, lasting difference in the Iringa region’s schools. These renovations are more than structural updates; they are a step towards fostering a supportive, healthy, and empowering environment where students can focus on learning and thrive academically.
