In the village of Batushë, home to just 957 residents, the shadow of the 1999 Kosovo War still lingers. Landmines left by Yugoslav forces have contaminated the area, particularly due to its strategic location near the Albanian border. This dangerous legacy prevents locals from gathering firewood, collecting water, and enjoying recreational activities.
In April 2023, the HALO Trust began the critical task of clearing mines in the Batushë district. HALO Kosovo’s dedicated team works through all seasons, facing dense vegetation and steep slopes that make the work both challenging and risky. So far, HALO has cleared 97,531 square feet, finding and destroying four anti-personnel mines.
Currently, seven deminers work diligently, 5 days a week on this task. For HALO deminers like Alban, this work is personal. During the war, Alban and his family were refugees. After returning home, he dedicated himself to making Kosovo a safe place for his family and for future generations.
Alban says his wife worries about the dangers posed by his job, sending him messages throughout the day to ensure he is safe. However, to Alban these challenges and dangers are worth it, and nothing can compare to finding mines, ensuring these remnants of war can no longer pose a threat.
Living in nearby Gjakova, Alban knows his efforts will benefit not just his family, but the entire community. He also shares vital risk education messages to help reduce the dangers mines pose.
Thanks to Alban, the HALO Kosovo team, and the committed community of HALO donors and supporters, the forest around Batushë will soon be safe for local families and tourists to enjoy. And Alban’s target, as for the whole HALO Kosovo team, is to make this possible across the entire country.
