In Syria, since the fall of the Assad regime, hundreds of thousands of refugees and IDPs are on the move trying to return home. Over a decade of conflict has left the country contaminated with dangerous bombs and landmines, posing a threat to their lives and limiting access to essential needs. With so many people on the move, casualties from landmines are surging, especially for children. HALO is working hard to clear the landmines, bombs, and IEDs to keep families safe, but we need your help.
Refugees and displaced families are returning to their homes to find bombs and rockets in buildings, gardens, and fields. We are receiving 10x the number of calls from the community, asking for help. We need to rapidly grow our teams to meet this demand. HALO is recording huge increases in civilian casualties from landmines since December 2024 - many of them children. As more families try to return, the number of accidents will rise.
The complex nature of the conflict meant before, HALO only worked in northwest Syria since 2016. With the fall of the Assad regime, HALO teams are now able to operate in what were once highly dangerous frontline areas. HALO is working hard to locate and permanently destroy the landmines and explosives, and your support will help us to expand and keep more families safe. We are also continuing our life-saving risk education to teach adults and children what to do if they come across an explosive.
Clearing the explosives is critical so that families in Syria can safely return home. Our work also restores access to essential services like water, healthcare, and education. Landmine clearance also supports economic recovery and has a huge stabilizing effect through employment and training, as 98% of our workforce is recruited from the communities where we work.
