Innovative Reading Tutors for Left-behind Children in Disadvantage Areas

By Ellen Yu | Project Manager

Dear Donors,

Thank you for supporting the "Remote Reading Fellows for Left-behind Children" programme. Since program launched, we have organized more than 1000 volunteers, serving more than 3000 children from 11 primary schools in disadvantages areas.

During the first half of this year, our programme continued to expand across the country, with over 160 volunteers recruited to become "Reading Fellows" for more than 1,000 children who were left behind in mountainous areas.

As you may know, children in impoverished areas often face a variety of educational resources limitations, not to say tutors for their studies. Remote Reading Fellows program aims to address these challenges. We're not just donating books, but also connecting volunteers in different cities with the goal of becoming children's reading companions. These volunteers will assist children in understanding the knowledge presented in books by interpreting the stories, and moreover, providing companionship that can support their growth and development.

It's so lovely to see how many schools are embracing the idea of having volunteers tell stories and record them into audio and video books, rather than having the children read the books themselves. It's a format that many teachers have never tried before, but it's been a huge hit with the students! They love having a hand in creating the books, and it's so inspiring to see them working with us to come up with new ideas and explore different themes. Volunteers are currently contributing topics such as fairy tales, idioms, STEM. And we are excited to keep developing new themes such as history.

I would like to thank you once again for your generous donation to our programme, which will be used to provide educational resources for those children. I hope that you will be able to gain a deeper understanding of the educational needs of children in disadvantage areas through our programme and share this knowledge with a wider audience.

Yours sincerely,

Ellen Yu
