Since 2022, HandsOnShanghai has launched the "Remote Reading Fellows" Project, which organises volunteers to remotely tell stories to left-behind children in schools in impoverished mountainous areas in the central and western regions, and combines this with reading materials donations to enrich extracurricular reading resources for mountainous schools, to help cultivate the reading interests and habits of younger children, and to accompany them in their happy growth. As of June 2023, we have served:
In addition to project implementation, we have established long-term co-operation with each of the schools we serve to follow up on the continued impact of the reading activities. Zhulou Primary School is one of the new schools that the project is working with in the first half of 2023. The school's headmaster, Mr Wang, shared with us how, with the support of the project, he has initiated a 30-minute reading programme at the school.
Zhulou Primary School is a rural primary school in Henan Province, established nearly 70 years ago, with 8 teachers and 65 students, most of whom are left-behind children. Although the rural school has fewer students and less funding, the school attaches great importance to the quality of education and has cultivated many university students. At the beginning of the year, HandOnShanghai linked social resources to donate nearly 200 extracurricular books to the school, and organised volunteers to be reading fellows, producing 30 audio e-books for students in grades 1-3. With the support of these multimedia teaching materials, the school's teachers took advantage of the lunch break to design a daily 30-minute reading activity time. The children had a great time looking at the colourful pictures in the books and listening to the volunteers' engaging interpretations. Headmaster Wang told us that "Every day, for 30 minutes, every day, there is something small to gain, and this is the most enjoyable and cherished moment for the children."
