The fast-moving fire, fueled by tinder-dry woodland due to a regional drought and fanned by hurricane-force winds, forced over 14,000 people to evacuate. It was being called the state’s worst wildfire in the past 100 years.
Save the Children, which has longstanding early childhood development and school literacy programs in the area, helped families whose children are in our programs.
With staff on the ground, supported by our national humanitarian relief teams and robust domestic disaster capacity, we moved quickly to mobilize our response to this disaster.
Because of your support, our program staff in eastern Tennessee was able to reach out to families in our programs, our school partners, local and state government, child care providers and others to learn of needs and mobilize responses. We were able to provide children with child safe spaces so families could focus on rebuilding their lives.
