Dear Rozaria Memorial Trust Development Partner

The year 2015 is the year to complete the project we started together in 2013; the construction of two classroom blocks at Magaya Primary School. We have moved milestones in the past two years which resulted in the two classroom blocks with two (2) classes each being built up to roof level. Your donations have been essential in covering for the labour costs for the project complimenting the gesture of Australian Embassy which donated the building materials to the school.

In the last quarter we managed to plaster the inside of both the two classroom blocks. We are happy that Magaya Primary School contributed to the project through a small grant on School Development it received from the government. The path and targets for the next four months are clear; all the classroom blocks should be floored, plastered outside, glazed and painted. This is essential in providing a liveable environment for the learning of the kids and also for the retention of critical staff members. We are confident that the completion of the project will help to improve the students’ enrolment and pass rate at the school.

As we write this report, the students at Magaya Primary School are already learning in the uncompleted classroom blocks as one of the old blocks at the school is no longer habitable. All the four classrooms on the blocks which are still under construction are occupied; this tells the critical need for the completion of the project. The students are being exposed to wind and dust as there are no floors and window panes.

Habitable Classrooms for Kids at Magaya School

Rozaria Memorial Trust has been supporting Magaya Primary School in the construction of two (2) classroom blocks after the school was destroyed by hailstorm in the year 2008. Both the classroom blocks where roofed in December 2013 and we initially planned to complete the other remain stages in 2014. However not much has been achieved under this period because of limited financial resources. The year 2014 has proved to be a challenging year in relation to the completion of the two (2) classroom blocks at the school. The project’s completion has been stalled by the non-availability of financial resources to cater for cement and labour.

The following work is still outstanding;
• Plastering of the classroom blocks both inside and outside
• Flooring
• Painting

Despite the outstanding work still to be done to the classrooms, the rooms are being in their incopmlete state as the school is facing acute shortage of learning facilities thereby exposing the children to dust and wind.

The local community has already mobilised the locally available material i.e river sand for flooring and pit sand for plastering. What are needed are financial resources to the total of $5000,00 to cater for 200 bags of cement and labour for plastering, flooring and painting. The non-completion of the classroom blocks have proved a nightmare to a school that has only three (3) classroom blocks that in a habitable state. The other one has been condemned by the Ministry of Education as it is posing danger to the children because of its dilapidated condition.

As we work with towards the rehabilitation of the school’s infrastructure, we have sourced library books from Books for Africa for the school worth more than US$5 000, 00. The library books range from English reading skills, Leisure, Maths and Science among many others. However the effective utilisation of the books is being hampered by lack of infrastructure to accommodate the books for the day to day use by the school.

In the year 2015 we are prioritising the completion of construction of the classroom blocks so as to provide a conducive and habitable for the children at the school. This in turn, will help to improve the pass rate at the school whilst at the same time increase the school’s enrolment which has been going down for the past five (5) years because of poor and inadequate infrastructure at the school.

Update on Rehabiliation of Magaya School

This is a progress report on our project on the rehabilitation of Magaya Primary school through the construction of two classroom blocks. The construction on the project started in March 2013 from foundation level. Your support has enabled us to cater for the labour costs for contractors and to compliment with some building materials.

The latest development is the completion of the roofing of the two (2) classroom blocks with each block having two classrooms. To complete the construction work, the next step to be taken is the plastering, flooring and painting of the classroom blocks. After completion of this, the classes will be ready for use by 200 students.

The head of Magaya Primary School, Mrs Wachipa summed up her gratitude to this achievement, “I can now afford a descent sleep knowing that we have partners who care about the welfare and education of our kids, the two classroom blocks will uplift the standards of education at the school. With the community struggling to pay the school fees, we will no have been able to carry out this massive work at our own. The rehabilitation project spearheaded by Rozaria Memorial Trust is making us to realise our dreams of a favorable learning environment for our students.”

Our project is 60% complete, we are now harnessing the financial resources to cater for 200 bags of cement and labour fees for plastering, flooring and painting. The total amount required is US$5 000, 00. The community is playing its part by providing the locally available building material that includes bricks, quarry stones and sand.

Last year was a difficult year in Zimbabwe, as the country went into elections. The education sector is yet to recover th the government has not been prioritising infrastructure rehabilitation. We are aso excited that through this project, there was increased visibility to our efforts. Books for Africa has offered to donate a container of Books for Magaya Primary school. This again has boosted our morale. We are anxious that the books may arrive when we do not have decent and secure storage facilities. If we complete these two classroom blocks, the school can use one of the inner staff rooms as a resource centre for the books.
