Summary

In Zimbabwe's Tongogara Refugee Settlement, environmental degradation threatens the lives and livelihoods of 17,000 refugees. Our project, led by the Refugee Coalition for Climate Action, aims to empower refugees by planting 50,000 trees, restoring ecosystems, and providing food and energy security. Through our community-led efforts, based inside Tongogara Refugee Settlement, we're planting the seeds of resilience and hope in Zimbabwe.

Challenge

An estimated 36% of the land area is lost annually in Zimbabwe due to degradation as a result of human and natural causes, severely impacting the Tongogara Refugee Settlement and its over 17,000 refugees. This community faces extreme weather, food shortages, and loss of natural habitat. To address this, Refugee Coalition for Climate Action plans to plant 50,000 trees and educate on sustainable practices, offering refugees the tools to rebuild their environment and secure a more stable future.

Solution

Our project aims to plant 50,000 trees in the Tongogara Refugee Settlement, directly addressing deforestation and climate change. This initiative includes tree planting, maintenance, and sustainable land management training. By actively involving the community, we empower refugees with skills to manage and protect their environment. This approach ensures food, energy, and ecological stability while fostering a culture of stewardship and participation among the refugees and host communities.

Long-Term Impact

By 2030, This project will complement our Refugee Settlement transformative agenda, improve food security, mitigate disaster impacts, improve habitats, and empower both communities by benefiting over 10,000 refugees and hosts: fostering leadership and community cohesion. advancing climate justice, advancing leadership in women and youth, enhancing mental well-being, and instilling sustainable energy practices, significantly reducing charcoal dependency for a sustainable, inclusive future.
