This project provides GED education to 20 refugee teens in Kuala Lumpur who have aged out of primary school options. Through trained teachers, a safe learning center, and personalized mentorship, we equip students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to pass the GED exam, opening doors to higher education, better jobs, and a brighter future.
Refugee youth in Malaysia are barred from public school and denied legal access to work, leaving many trapped in poverty. Only 16% of refugee teenagers have access to secondary education (UNHCR). Most secondary options are either unaffordable or low-quality, and alternative pathways like the GED are rare, often poorly taught, and misaligned with U.S. standards. These barriers to education further limit refugees' chances for higher education, employment, and long-term stability.
KRC's GED Project equips refugee youth (ages 15-20) with high-quality, American-standard GED preparation taught by U.S.-trained educators. Students receive instruction in core subjects (math, language arts, social studies, and science), test-taking strategies, and digital literacy, along with mentoring and leadership training. This holistic, skills-based approach prepares students to pass the GED test, pursue higher education, and access future employment.
This project helps break the cycle of poverty by equipping refugee youth with the education they need to access college, employment, and long-term stability. More specifically, the GED program will develop a pipeline of refugee educators who can return to teach and lead within KRC's own programs, ensuring sustainability and empowering the next generation from within the community.
