Empowering rural women through sustainable vegetable farming

In the heart of Hoima district, Uganda, rural women are breaking barriers and reshaping their futures through sustainable organic vegetable farming. Traditionally marginalized and facing significant challenges—from limited access to resources to male-dominated control of income—these women are now being empowered with the skills and tools needed to transform their livelihoods.

Recently, nine women from two village groups attended an intensive vegetable farming training. During the training, they learned how to maximize small plots of land for diverse crop production and even integrate animal husbandry, rearing goats and pigs. The women were also introduced to innovative techniques like sack gardens and learned how to create organic pesticides and manure from animal urine and green plants available in their environment.

The training covered a wide variety of crops, including Beet spinach, onions, strawberries, Portuguese cabbage, red chili, eggplant, green pepper, amaranthus, climbing beans, mulberries, and gooseberries. Equipped with seedlings, the women have already begun planting in their homes and are eager to apply their newfound knowledge.

This initiative not only improves food security and nutrition but also promotes gender equality by enabling women to take control of their finances and contribute meaningfully to their communities. We will continue to follow up on the progress of these women farmers and their gardens, ensuring they thrive as they grow the seeds of a brighter, more sustainable future.
