This project targets to reduce poverty level for 1000 poor rural widows families in Gicumbi District in Rwanda, The poverty levels in the district are high compared to the national levels, with 49.3% of the population under poverty line and 33.9% of the population in extreme poverty, national levels being 44.9 and 24.1% respectively. The project intends to use two interventions likely (i) Promotion of small livestock for 1000 targeted widows (ii) adoption of horticulture and fruits plants.
The Gicumbi District presents a high density of 480 inh./sq km above national average (416 inh./sqkm); 52.5% population are women, the poverty level is high with 49.3% of the population under poverty line and 33.9% of the population in extreme poverty. This has seriously affected living condition of more than 16,000 poor widows families facing malnutrition, poor education for kids and health problems. The project will support 1000 families to lift from excessive poverty and will serve as modal.
The project will use two intervention: 1. Promotion of small livestock for 1000 poor widows' families; 2. adoption of horticulture and fruits plants, each family will be supported with one goat along with 3 iron sheet for shelter, 5 kit of vegetables seeds and 5 Nurse fruits plants, 2000 families will be trained on the use of manure and agricultural production,Kitchen garden preparation and will be facilitated to create small group cooperatives among beneficiaries, Goat new born will be shared.
The project will train above 2000 families on poverty eradication tools and this will enable 1000 poor widows families First round) to shift from excessive poverty and improve health and well being. The income will be generated for beneficiaries by selling new goats, legumes and fruits; Supported families will be grouped in cooperative to easy livestock exchange this will create social cohesion for sustainability of the project, fruits plants will provide fruits while protection soil erosion.
