The project aims to help women, adolescents and children fight gender based violence empowering them with life skills, academic engagement, reproductive health, livelihood and employable skills, and encouraging community leadership to reduce Gender Based Violence and for access to citizenship rights including civic amenities.
A highly patriarchal society, India is caught up in gender inequalities in both public and private spheres. The problems & issues faced by women and adolescent girls in the target communities are lack of decision making power, early marriages, school drop out, lack of financial autonomy, poor knowledge of reproduction and sexual health, lack of access to legal support at times of abuse & violence and poor quality of education
Maitri works to empower women, adolescent and children by providing them quality education, employability skills, literacy, community leadership and life skills. In employability skills we currently run sewing classes, spoken English classes, vocational training with reputed institutes, and making hand made accessories. In community leadership, the project empowers women and youth leaders from the community. In life skills, Maitri organises training on Gender, self defence and life skills.
We will educate young girls, women, men and boys to be active partners in bringing about the social change needed to reduce gender based violence in target communities, giving rise to healthy and happy families. The project will reduce number of school drop out rates, early marriages, and promote access to citizenship rights, employable skills, improve behavioural and attitudinal change and raise community leaders who can bring collective actions and change.
