 CAMPAIGN REPORT

INTRODUCTION

Omuto Foundation is a registered national and community-based organization dedicated to improving the lives of vulnerable populations in Mpigi and Butambala Districts in rural Uganda. This report presents the Foundation's comprehensive approach to addressing period poverty through the establishment of a local menstrual pad production unit. The initiative represents a strategic shift from temporary relief efforts to sustainable, community-driven solutions that empower women economically while ensuring schoolgirls have uninterrupted access to education.

PROBLEM STATEMENT AND BACKGROUND

The Challenge of Period Poverty

Period poverty remains a significant barrier to girls' education and overall well-being in Mpigi District.

The lack of access to affordable and dignified menstrual products creates a vicious cycle that perpetuates poverty across generations.

Girls without adequate menstrual hygiene management miss school days, fall behind academically, and become vulnerable to:

  • School absenteeism and poor academic performance
  • Early pregnancies and forced early marriages
  • Increased risk of sexually transmitted diseases and infections (STDs/STIs)
  • Limited future economic opportunities and social mobility

Previous Intervention Efforts

Omuto Foundation has historically responded to this crisis through donation programs. In the most recent quarter alone, the Foundation distributed 125 packs of reusable sanitary pads to 125 vulnerable girls across two schools in Mpigi District.

While these donations provided immediate relief, subsequent monitoring and evaluation revealed that the unmet need far exceeded the Foundation's capacity to sustain donation-based interventions.

Many more girls continued to require access to affordable, sustainable menstrual products.

Strategic Pivot to Sustainability

Recognizing the limitations of a donation-dependent model, the Omuto Foundation embarked on establishing a local pad production unit. This strategic initiative aims to create lasting impact through:

  • Local production of eco-friendly, reusable menstrual pads
  • Ensuring affordability and consistent availability of products
  • Building a sustainable supply chain independent of external donations
  • Empowering women through income-generating production activities
  • Reinvesting generated income into production, menstrual health education, and sanitation infrastructure improvements

ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN

The "Cycle of Dignity" Campaign

The Foundation launched an ambitious online fundraising campaign titled "Cycle of Dignity," anchored by the powerful motto: "A pad today, a graduate tomorrow." This slogan encapsulates the transformative potential of menstrual health interventions in breaking the cycle of poverty and enabling educational achievement.

Campaign Target: UGX 5,000,000

Fundraising Strategies Implemented:

  • The 5×5 Initiative: Creating networks of five contributors who each donate between UGX 10,000 to UGX 100,000, designed to generate a ripple effect throughout communities
  • Social Media Adoption Campaign: Sharing specific production items for adoption through WhatsApp groups, LinkedIn, and other social media platforms
  • Individual Contributions: Welcoming donations starting from UGX 10,000 and above to ensure inclusive participation.

NOTE: We have Successfully raised UGX 800,000 in the first month of the Cycle of Dignity campaign, representing 16% of the overall target

Product Development and Branding

The Foundation has undertaken significant product development work, including:

  • Procurement of materials using initial campaign funds
  • Design and production of two prototype sets of reusable menstrual pads
  • Begun small-scale production and distribution to gather user feedback and refine the product before full-scale manufacturing.
  • Testing and refinement of the product specifications
  • Strategic rebranding from "RED Pads" to "Dignity Pads" to emphasize empowerment and advocate for girls' dignity and self-worth

Advocacy and Community Awareness

International Girl Child Day Partnership: The Foundation collaborated with Buwama FM in Mpigi District to conduct community awareness program focused on menstruation education, myth-busting, and promoting sustainable menstrual health solutions.

Documentary Production

A comprehensive documentary on period poverty is currently in production. The film captures diverse perspectives on menstrual knowledge, challenges faced by girls and women, and proposed community solutions. The documentary is scheduled for release next month and will serve as both an advocacy tool and educational resource.

RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Expand the 5×5 initiative with communities and professional networks to accelerate progress toward the UGX 5,000,000 target.
  • Leverage the Documentary: Utilize the upcoming documentary release as a major advocacy moment to attract media attention, new donors, and partnership opportunities.
  • Develop Distribution Networks: Establish partnerships with schools, health centers, and community organizations to ensure efficient product distribution and education.
  • Implement Income-Generation Model: Formalize the women's empowerment component by recruiting, training, and employing local women in the production process.
  • Expand Educational Programming: Develop comprehensive menstrual health education materials and training programs for schools and community groups.
  • Geographic Expansion: Replicate the model in neighboring districts, creating a regional network of local production units.
  • Sanitation Infrastructure Investment: Allocate resources to upgrading school sanitation facilities, including private changing rooms and water access.
  • Research and Documentation: Conduct rigorous impact evaluation to document improvements in school attendance, academic performance, and girls' confidence.
