End Period Poverty: Dignity for 5K Ugandan Girls

School Outreach Report | Bright Community Primary School, Kyebando

Today, Omuto Foundation, in partnership with Yambi Community Outreach, conducted a RED Campaign School Outreach at Bright Community Primary School, Kyebando.

The outreach provided separate safe spaces for girls and boys to openly discuss adolescence, menstrual health, personal hygiene, respect, leadership, and healthy relationships. We also established the school’s RED Brigade, a team of student champions who will lead menstrual health awareness and promote dignity within the school.

One important lesson from today’s outreach is that boys are essential allies in ending period poverty and menstrual stigma.

Menstrual health is often seen as a girls’ issue, yet boys have a vital role to play. They become classmates, brothers, friends, fathers, teachers, employers, and leaders. When they understand menstruation, they are more likely to show respect, challenge stigma, and support girls instead of excluding them.

At the same time, boys also need safe spaces. They are growing through adolescence and face questions about mental health, identity, emotions, peer pressure, and what it means to become responsible young men. These conversations are rarely given the attention they deserve.

We cannot achieve gender equality by focusing on only one side. True equality requires equity for both girls and boys. Empowering girls remains critical, but empowering boys to become informed, compassionate, and responsible allies is just as important.

By investing in both, we build schools where every child feels safe, respected, and empowered—and where young people work together to create lasting change.
