This project aims to support Lulama, a retiring receptionist from Paterson, in establishing a small food business centered around her well-known homemade vetkoek. Recognized within her community for both her exceptional cooking and her warm personality, Lulama plans to turn her passion into a sustainable source of income during retirement while creating employment opportunities for another community member.
Retirement in rural communities such as Paterson often brings financial uncertainty, particularly for women over the age of 50 who face significant barriers to accessing finance and starting small businesses. Although many individuals possess valuable skills, experience, and strong community relationships, the lack of start-up capital prevents them from converting these assets into sustainable livelihoods.
Without intervention, Lulama's years of experience, entrepreneurial spirit, and trusted reputation would remain an untapped opportunity for both herself and the wider community.
Project Solution
The project will provide the resources needed for Lulama to establish a fully compliant mobile vetkoek business. Funding will be used to:
The business is expected to provide Lulama with a reliable income after retirement while creating employment for at least one additional member of the local community.
Current Progress
Although fundraising is still underway, Lulama has already taken important steps toward building her business. While continuing her work as a receptionist, she has begun selling her homemade vetkoek to colleagues every three weeks.
These regular sales have provided valuable practical experience, allowing her to:
This early trading has demonstrated positive customer interest and provides encouraging evidence that the business has the potential to succeed once the food trailer becomes operational.
By investing in Lulama's skills and determination, this project demonstrates how targeted support can empower older women to become successful entrepreneurs while creating lasting social and economic benefits for their communities.
