Disaster recovery in Duplin County, North Carolina from the aftermath of Hurricane Florence continues to progress. Some households are complete and others in various stages of completion. We continue to collaborate with other agencies in North Carolina to meet the needs of those still working on their homes. All people that were housed in FEMA housing must be out by March so those are the survivors that are being prioritized currently along with those with serious health issue, older residents and families with small children. Our organization has helped with 40 cases but there are still 248 open cases. Problems affecting recovery are funding to purchase materials and volunteer labor. All agencies helping are relying on grants and donations which have a great deal of competition to receive.
The week prior to Christmas we were able to provide sheetrock and insulation for one family to be one step closer to getting out of the FEMA trailer. It is very humbling to see the joy on the faces of those receiving funding and nothing harder to face than saying "no we can't help fund your recovery at this time due to financials restraints." At the current rate of recovery we are looking at another 2-3 years before every home is whole and complete.
