Rebuild Yaw Owusukrom School Classrooms (#74521)

By Klay Nachelle | Executive Director

Executive Summary

Thanks to the generosity of supporters like you, Bridgeway Foundation LBG is working to transform learning conditions for children at the Yaw Owusukrom public school in Ghana. This report provides an update on our progress, the impact your donation is helping to create, and what comes next as we move toward our goal of rebuilding every classroom in the school.

Since launching this project on GlobalGiving, we have begun engaging the local community, completing site assessments, and procuring initial building materials. Every contribution, no matter the size, is directly enabling safer, brighter, and more effective places of learning for the children of Yaw Owusukrom.

The Challenge We Are Addressing

The classrooms at Yaw Owusukrom's public school have fallen into a serious state of disrepair. Cracked walls, leaking and damaged roofs, poor ventilation, and a chronic lack of desks and furniture have made the learning environment both unsafe and deeply uncomfortable for pupils and teachers alike. During the rainy season, which lasts several months of the year, lessons are frequently disrupted or cancelled entirely as water pours through damaged roofing and children are forced out of classrooms.

Children are currently studying in overcrowded rooms with insufficient seating. Many sit on the floor or share a single desk between multiple pupils. Teachers are working in conditions that make quality instruction nearly impossible. Families in the community have watched this deterioration with growing concern, aware that their children's education and their futures are at stake.

The situation urgently requires action, and that is exactly what your support is making possible.

Our Solution

Bridgeway Foundation's response is both practical and comprehensive. We are rebuilding and rehabilitating the school's classrooms from the ground up, focusing on structural integrity, comfort, and functionality. The core work includes:

  • Reinforcing and repairing foundations, load-bearing walls, and superstructure
  • Installing new weather-proof roofing sheets, ridge caps, and fasteners to eliminate leaks
  • Fitting secure doors and windows to protect against weather and improve safety
  • Plastering, flooring, and painting all surfaces to create clean, durable interiors
  • Improving natural ventilation in every classroom to reduce heat and improve air quality
  • Procuring and installing locally made desks and bench sets so every child has a proper place to sit and write

The result will be a set of classrooms that are safe, weather-proof, and designed to support consistent teaching and learning every day of the school year.

Progress Update: What We Have Done So Far

Since the project launched on GlobalGiving, our team has carried out the following:

  • Completed a full site assessment and structural survey of all classrooms to determine priority intervention areas
  • Engaged the local community including parents, teachers, and traditional leaders in project planning and awareness
  • Begun sourcing locally available building materials, including cement, blocks, roofing sheets, and timber
  • Established a project management framework, with dedicated site supervisors and a procurement schedule aligned to available funds

 What Is Next

As fundraising builds momentum, we will immediately advance to the following phases:

  • Phase 1 - Foundation and Walling: Repair and reinforce all cracked or unstable wall sections and foundations
  • Phase 2 - Roofing: Replace damaged roofing entirely across all classrooms
  • Phase 3 - Doors, Windows, and Finishing: Install new fittings, then plaster, floor, and paint
  • Phase 4 - Furnishing: Deliver and install pupil desks, teacher tables, and chairs

Impact: What Your Donation Is Achieving

Your support is already making a difference. By contributing to this project, you are:

  • Protecting the physical safety of every child and teacher in the school
  • Ensuring lessons can run uninterrupted throughout the year, including during the rainy season
  • Reducing absenteeism caused by poor classroom conditions
  • Giving teachers the conditions they need to deliver quality instruction
  • Building community confidence in the value of education
  • Helping lay the foundation for improved learning outcomes, school completion, and better livelihoods for children in Yaw Owusukrom

Over the long term, a rebuilt school will contribute to breaking the cycle of poverty for an entire generation of children and families in this community. The ripple effects of more children completing basic education, gaining foundational skills, and accessing further opportunities will be felt for decades.
