Challenge

Reading and writing are priorities given their social, political and economic significance. Still, in Argentina desires for a reading and critical society are not consistent with available performance results. 2019 UNESCO tests reveled that 5/10 Argentine students do not understand what they read at 9 years old. 2023 statistics show that only 4/10 students conclude their primary education with appropriate skills and in the correct timing, with this number dropping to 1/10 for secondary schooling

Solution

Since 2006, EyC designs and improves evidence-based programs to enhance reading and writing skills of children in vulnerability. EyC's programs were first implemented in Learning Centers of its own, but since 2022 45 Civil Society Organizations have become part of EyC's Afterschool Programs Support Network, benefiting 3000 students. Teachers are trained to implement EyC's learning strategies, which are systematized into textbooks that all students receive. Standarized tests are ran annually.

Long-Term Impact

Periodic redesigns of EyC's programe based on performance evidence can contribute to refine reading and writing programs that specifically target the educational needs of children in vulnerable context. EyC's evidence based knowledge on replicability conditions of its programs can help a wide range of institutions in its implementation. Direct impact in 2024 on 300 teachers and 3000 students will indirectly benefit the educational facilities where they work, potential students and families.
