As the blessed month of Ramadan approached, Elaf RD launched a humanitarian initiative titled "Ramadan of Freedom" — a campaign aimed at bringing dignity and comfort to some of the most vulnerable families in Syria. In a context marked by years of displacement, conflict, and hardship, the simple act of sharing food took on a powerful meaning. It became a message of solidarity, hope, and freedom from hunger.
Throughout Ramadan Elaf RD was able to reach 5,000 families with critical food assistance. These families included persons with disabilities, orphaned children, women-headed households, and elderly individuals — all of whom continue to bear the brunt of Syria’s ongoing humanitarian crisis.
Before the distributions began, Elaf RD teams conducted local needs assessments in coordination with community committees and local councils to identify those most in need. The aim was clear: to ensure that no fasting family was left behind. Based on these assessments, food baskets were designed to meet the basic nutritional needs of a five-member household for two weeks. The contents included staple items such as rice, bulgur, lentils, canned foods, oil, sugar, dates, and tea — culturally appropriate and locally procured to support the local economy.
Distributions were organized across multiple communities in Damscus, Aleppo, Homs, Hama and Idlib. carried out with care and dignity. At each distribution point, Elaf RD staff and volunteers worked tirelessly to manage logistics, verify beneficiary lists, and ensure safe, respectful interaction with the community.
The feedback we received was deeply moving. Families expressed gratitude for being remembered during the holy month, and many mothers told our team that, for the first time in months, they felt a sense of relief knowing their children would have enough to eat at iftar. One elderly woman, who cares for her orphaned grandchildren, described the food basket as “a lifeline.”
Despite the success, challenges persisted. Road access in some areas was limited due to insecurity and poor conditions. The number of families in need far exceeded the resources available. Community members also raised the need for additional support — hygiene items, baby formula, and cash assistance — reminding us that the struggle against poverty and displacement is multifaceted.
Nevertheless, the “Ramadan of Freedom” project served as a vital intervention, reinforcing the values of compassion and shared humanity that define this sacred month. It also reaffirmed Elaf RD’s deep connection to the communities we serve, as well as our commitment to restoring dignity in times of hardship.
As we reflect on this project, we remain inspired by the resilience of the Syrian people. With continued support, we hope to expand this initiative in the years to come, reaching more families and offering more than just food — offering hope.
