As part of our normal programming we are planning for the Raising Voices Phase II photo exhibition which will take place soon. The exhibition is supposed to take in the month of September. This has been made possible by the support of GlobalGiving and Lensational.

Mathare Foundation participants have continued to manifest positive progress in terms of masterly of photography technics. The skills that they have acquired are being transfered to other young people within the organization and this is not only brings ripple effects but it ensures that number of emerging trainers is rising.

The photography instructor is on the center of ensuring that the participants can edit their photos through simple editing sotwares such as Microsoft Office Picture Manager to sophicated applications such as Adobe Photoshop. The participants are in the initial stages of ensuring that the they are conversant with photo editing.

The participants are also being trained on how to organize a photo exhibition since they are supposed to play an integral part in the upcoming photo exhibition. During the exhibition, we shall invite partners, family and friends to this event so that we are able to showcase what skills the young people have gained throughout the year.

We have had a couple of challenges in the implementation of this project. There has been existance of new projects within the organization which interfere with the normal  routine. To reduce and/or curb this interference, we have been able to maintain our traditional activities on the weekends and work on the new exisitng projects on the weekdays.

Thank you so much for your support wherever you are.

Raising Voices Phase II Second Report The Mathare Foundation has made progressive steps since receiving the Global Giving grants. We have not disappointed as usual. It is an impeccable work that we have done with dedicated team of both trainees and trainers. The photography trainings have, been going own successful with a focus on the both the technical aspect of photography and issues related to life skills. It will be redundant to only teach photography as an art and forget how life skills play a fundamental role in practical photography. Essentially our course is tailored around training photography through life skills. It is for that reason that we adopted the Life Skills and Photography curriculum that is used with members of Alliance of Slum Media Organizations where we are an affiliate member. We have had a couple of success stories since the young budding photographers can actually now work together as a team since during the group discussion that the tutors organize they not only talk about photography but also how they can work together on other issues affecting them in their own society. We were able to organize the Animals Raising Voices Photo exhibitions at the Alliance Francaise (The French Cultural Center in Nairobi). This is after a series of photography workshops and field excursion both in the National Park and in the slums. Here are some of the milestones of the projects so far (i) Improved skills level among the participants (ii) Some of the participants are capable of doing semiprofessional photography jobs in events. (iii) 10 participants have mastered the art of doing animal (wildlife) photography (iv) Emergence of young role models who are viewed as peace ambassadors (v) Generation of income for the photographers. During the photo exhibition we were able to sell photos for $80. The funds were then channeled to support the activities of Mathare Foundation and also cover school fees for 2 participants. (vi) Awareness creation to the general public what the Mathare Foundation does in terms of impacting the lives of young people in the slums of Mathare These milestones speaks volume without a doubt. We are going to continue with this trend until we achieve our overall goal.

The Raising Voice Phase II commenced shortly after the disbursement of funds by GlobalGiving on the 26th of January. We have been conducting our weekend photography classes for 2 hours each day. Our trainings take place at Mathare Foundation offices. Every Saturday and Sunday we have been offering both theory and practical sessions in photography. The participants have been getting meals after the trainings because they come from a home that getting even 2 meals in a day is a big challenge. This motivates them to attend classes regularly since they are assured that their meal will be taken care of by the Mathare Foundation. The donors who contributed to this initiative have made the children to be very active and happy.
We have also paid 4 months up front for our rent. We have paid from January to April. This means we are covered in terms of the venue where our photography sessions take place. This is big plus for us an organization. We are able to conduct our activities smoothly because we are not in any debts.
The two-photography trainer’s allowances have been covered. This motivates them to come to the class more frequent because they have something to take home and something for their upkeep. We now can see the energy and the children are getting the best out of them.
I would say generally that the GlobalGiving funds that we have raised has boosted the morale of everyone in the project. The spirit is very high than never before. The work that the young lads are doing is very incredible. This is something to be proud of.

We want to take this opportunity to state categorically that this is a progressive project, which without any doubt is bearing fruits and the talent we are nurturing is through the possible support of our donors from all corners of the world. Without you there is no us. Thank you our donors and thank you GlobalGiving.
